"Frank! Here!" Mary says as she leaves class.
Frank observes in detail, as she gets closer, that his niece is coming along with a boy.
"Can Luke come home with us?"
"Hi!" The little boy says quickly.
"What?"
The girl rolls her eyes knowing that her uncle has already misunderstood everything. "It's for an art project, Uncle Frank"
The man lowers his eyes a little with his glasses to observe the boy. For some strange reason he reminded him of someone.
"Uncle Frank? Uncle Frank!" Mary calls out to him, tugging at his shirt.
"Yeah I guess, Did you ask your mom?" He asks the boy.
"She hasn't come looking for me yet"
Frank looks at the two little ones and lets out a sigh. "Listen, I understand but I'm sorry, I can't do anything if your mother-"
"Luke!" A woman comes walking quickly towards them. Frank doesn't recognize her from afar, but as the woman begins to get closer, his body tenses.
On the other hand, Y/n does not lend to the man next to her, but totally prioritizes her sight on her son. She bends over and kisses him and hugs him "Sorry L, the bus broke down and I had to come running" She explains while trying to catch her breath. She then, breaks the hug with the little one and smiles at him.
"Running was never your forte huh?"
The voice freezes y/n. She stands up as turns to see him.
"Hi y/n"
"Frank" she replies coldly but politely.
Mary watches the two curiously. She's not and idiot about what's going on, but decides to hold back the urge to ask about it. Instead, she extends her hand gently towards her partner's beautiful mother in greeting.
"Hi, I'm Mary. Luke and I are classmates, can he come to my house to do an art project?"

Luke and Mary are in the living room, which is littered with colored paper, paints, and brushes, working on the project.

In the distance, from the kitchen, sitting at the table, Frank and Y/n watch them.
The tension between the two is...uncomfortable.
Neither spoke to the other since they got into
Frank's truck to go home, after the two little ones insisted on it.
They only shared small comments but both were directed at the two children.

Frank clears his throat, breaking the awkward moment. "So Luke is..." he starts to ask. "My son. Yes." Y/n for nothing in the world does take her eyes off the living room.
Frank pauses before continuing, knowing that with what he's about to say, he's going to step on dangerous ground. But he needs to know.
"You and your husband should be proud."
"It's just Luke and me." She directs her gaze to him. And she knows that he wants to know more about it.
"After our relationship ended, I accepted a job at that restaurant I told you about before... well you know and went to North Carolina. I met him there and the rest...We got married, I got pregnant and then, three months later, he showed up with the divorce papers telling me that he was with another woman and that he didn't want a child, that it was a lot of responsibility for him. So I quit the job and came back here with my parents, I had Luke and here I am." She points to herself. "sitting across from my first ex boyfriend while my son and his daughter do a project on-"
"Mary is my niece in fact. She is Diane's daughter."
Y/n is surprised. Although she is also a bit confused. Of course she met Diane when she and Frank were dating, but she never found out that she was pregnant, or that she lived with her sister here.
"I didn't know she got pregn-- I thought Diane lived in-"
"She committed suicide. When Mary was only six months old. She left me in charge of her"
Frank lowers her head and closes his eyes. Mentioning how it happened is not something he likes to tell.
Y/n she is shocked. She knew Frank's sister, because he introduced her to her at the time, and she thought she was the most intelligent and brilliant person there could be. That's why she can't believe how...
"I-I'm sorry"
Frank doesn't say anything, but he feels like y/n takes it in his hands. He missed her.
A lot.
Feeling her skin again after so long brought back all the memories he had with her. And although it was his decision to have cut off her relationship, due to the fact that he was not good enough for her, he regrets it very much and cannot, he just cannot believe that another man has done that to her.
"He's an idiot" he says suddenly
"Who?"
Frank looks up. First looking at their hands and then... at her.
He gets up a bit from his chair to get a little closer to y/n, who doesn't seem to understand.
Now it is he who takes it from her hands.
"For leaving you and Luke. Him" referring to the boy's absent father.
"And me too Y/n. I was an idiot too"
"Frank..."
"I was an idiot and I really regret it and no, I don't want you to be with me again because i know it would be too fast, and I don't want to screw it up again."
"Everything changed a lot for both of us. Now we have other responsibilities"
"I know" he replies "And what responsibilities huh" he adds making y/n laugh a little.
Both observe the two little ones, who are oblivious to the situation in the kitchen.
"Would you and Luke, I don't know, like to stay for dinner?"
Y/n turns to see Frank, who smiles nervously. "And by dinner I mean to order food"
"You still setting the kitchen on fire?" She responds playfully. Frank laughs at the question.
"I don't think it's polite to give you cereal with milk for dinner, is it?"
Y/n lets out a wide laugh now.
"You're quite the case Frank... but yes, delivery food sounds good"...
