The tree canopy was giving me some relief from the sun, my army greens clung to me from all the sweat. I saw a farm a few miles back I was going to go check it out after some hunting, my older brothers taught me everything I knew about tracking. It helped a lot more than I thought I would in the army.
I stopped following a trail a while ago, there were small footprints in the mud, they were fresh "hello?" I said loud but gently, if this was a kid I needed them to trust me, having an automatic rifle in my hands probably didn't help.
A small figure stepped out from behind a tree, "hello" she was so thin, when was the last time she ate "hey, are you alone" she nodded "are they gone" she asked I pulled my pack off my back slowly so she could watch my every move, I pulled out a can of beans and the can opener, I set them down with a spoon and took a few steps back, she took a second to access the situation than ran to it
"Eat slow, you don't want to make yourself sick, she nodded and slowed "are you alone?" she swallowed her food before talking, she got manners "I was with a group, walkers came and we got separated" I nodded, they are probably still looking for her "where were they, I'm sure they are still there I'll take you"
She led us back to the highway, there were a few people shuffling some supplies into their bag "that's them" she ran forward before I could catch her "looky here boys, were gonna have fun tonight" the man had an evil smile Sophia ran back to me, and I lifted my gun "you're one hot bitch" guess they haven't seen any women for a while, I've seen myself I looked like shit, all sweaty and dirty "walk away" my stern captain voice told them "one guy stalked closser
I pulled out my handgun I couldn't waste my bullets in the big one they were hard to find. I pulled Sophia behind a car as the shot. "Your bleeding" I sat with my back to the car breathing heavy, my mind flooding back to that day "what" she looked worried "I know a shoelace knot" I nodded and pulled my coat off "do you see blood on my back" she shook her head
"There's blood here too" while she tied my shoulder I looked at the one on my stomach, with no exit wound, " he's got some aim" she looked confused I pointed to it "he's just millimeters off from having a perfect shot on an old scar" she nodded and I took her to a small structure I found a day ago "we'll go in the morning, sleep" digging threw my bag I pulled out my army first aid kit, this is gonna be a bitch, she was asleep by the wall across me, I leaned my head back preparing myself for what I was going to do, a half bottle of jack got my attention "fuck ya" I whispered. I drank most of it and poured the rest on my tools and the bullet hole, "you got this" it took everything in me not to scream when I dug it in, the good news is the bullet was still there, that bugger could have gone anywhere, I pulled it out and looked at it, still intact. Good.
I sewed myself up with shaky hands, I couldn't to the one on my shoulder, not like this. "Sophia" I whispered, "let's go, there's a farm a little bit from here we'll be safe there for a while"
Meanwhile
Carol finally was out of the RV and sat by the fire, Daryl sat beside her handing her a rose, "I have a little sister" she looked at him twirling the second rose in his hand "the bush only had two, I'm not stupid enough to think it's for merle, but I think it's for ya girl and my sister"
"She was the only one of us to get out of that hell hole, she joined the military and worked her ass off to a captain, we were so proud of her, two months before this started some men came to our door to tell us she was mia" carol placed her hand on his leg "do you think she's still over there" he shrugged "walker" Shane stook up, dale looks down the scope "that's not a walker"
"Stay behind me Sophia, don't come out unless I say" she nodded holding onto my pant leg, two men walked up one with a buzz cut and the other wearing a sheriffs uniform, he looked pale "who are you" I didn't get to answer before Sophia ran out from behind me "MOMMY!"
"Sophia!" I yelled to her and tried to reach for her but a pain shot threw my arm " you bit?" I didn't pay attention to him, I was staring at the man besid the girl's mom. I shuffled my gun into the sheriff's chest and let my bag fall to the ground before running and jumping in his arms, like always he caught me but he fell and we landed on the ground. I ignored the pain in my shoulder and just cried.
"Hershal can look at that" the man I came to know as Rick said. I followed him to the house Daryl not far behind him "you know her" they talked in the door, and I was led to a room where a little boy was laying "my sister" Daryl answered back, I smiled at Rick. "What was it," Herschel asked "gunshot, got one here too, but I got the bulled out and sewed up" I lifted my shirt to show him "he looked at it before going to my shoulder" your going to need to take off the shirt" I tensed and looked to Daryl. He gave me a small nod
I was back on to the men in the door, I heard Daryl hiss and Rick gasp, most of my scars were from that monster "it's going to hurt" the man warned me "can't hurt any more than torture" this was my way of talking about it, my therapist told me I should, he gave me a sad smile.
"What happened" I looked at the boy trying to distract myself "hunting accident"
"He looks pale"
"He needs blood", Hershel dug into my shoulder "I'm o neg, ill give you some when your done" I hissed out the old man shook his head "you've lost enough already" "I can do it" he looked at me, his eyes were so gentle. "You're going to do it even if I tell you not to aren't you" I nodded.
I was resting my head on my hand while I gave carl blood, I felt someone put a blanket over my lap "who is she" a woman I don't think I met asked whoever was in here "shes Daryl's little sister" Rick was in here, I'd be lying to myself if I said I wasn't attracted to the man "we don't even know her and you let her give our son blood, what if she has some disease or something"
"I don't, army screens ya every time you go out and come back" I lazily opened my eyes to look at her "your boy needs it, the least ya could do is be grateful" I disconnected from the kid and started to leave, Rick caught me from falling over "you shouldn't have given blood, daddy said you lost a lot already" maggie set a glass of orange juice and a plate of cookies on the table and rick helped me sit
"How long were you out there?" Daryl and the others joined us, he didn't want to leave my side, merle wasn't anywhere in sight "since it started, our base was overrun when we landed, the platoon that found me fought them off and cleared the building, I geared up and went home to get Daryl and merle to bring them back when they weren't there I went to Atlanta, I was about to leave when a car alarm got my attention so I followed it. By the time I found it whoever was there was gone, the quarry was empty 'sides a few walkers" Daryl squeezed my hand
"My next stop was the CDC, I fell out of contact with them a week before that so I thought it was my best bet but I was too late, so I just carried on until I found Sophia She brought me back to the highway, got into a gunfight with some perverts and came back here. We were gonna clear the place out and stay a few days looking for her mother"
Carol smiled at me and thanked me again "thanks for what you did for my boy" Rick looked better I gave him a smile and received a glare from Lori, his wife ya he was married.
