starcourt mall. the most popular place to hang in hawkins. especially now that it's summer.

the bell at scoops ahoy, the ice cream parlor, rings over and over.

"hey dingus', your children are here!" robin yells from the front counter. steve opens the window, "again?" he says annoyed. kayla pops out from the corner into the window view and sees the kids at the counter. "seriously?" she says also annoyed.

steve opens the back door and checks if it's clear before moving to let them out, "i swear if anyone hears about this—"he says getting cut off.
"we're dead!" they all yell. steve turns back to see kayla looking at him. "what?" he says. she just laughs and turns to walk away. he looks at her smiling and following her.

kayla, steve, and robin are slinging ice cream to customers when the lights go out. "that's weird." steve says walking over to the light switch flicking it repeatedly. "that isn't gonna work dingus." robin says looking at him annoyed. "oh, really?" steve says still flicking the switch.

kayla's sitting on counter in front of the little window. she gets a unsettling feelings in her stomach. no one in the mall realizes that the power went out in all of hawkins. suddenly the power switches on and everyone in the mall cheers. "let there be light." steve says proudly. robin scoffs as she shakes her head.

meanwhile will in the theater, after the power comes back on, he feels that familiar tingle in the back of his neck. he gets flashbacks of what happened a few years ago. he gets ripped out of his thoughts by the movie playing in front of him.

meanwhile with kayla, that feeling in her stomach hasn't gone away. she feels a lump in her throat as she gets up and runs to the back room and into the bathroom, leaning into the toilet, spilling out her insides.

steve hands the ice cream to the customer and runs to kayla in the bathroom. "holy shit, are you okay?" steve says holding back her hair, taking her sailor hat off. "steve." she says looking back at him wiping her mouth. "what's wrong?" he says rubbing her back. "it's back, i can feel it." she says with fear in her eyes. steve pulls her into a hug, sitting against the stall door holding her in his arms as she catches her breath.

kayla is sitting in the back room with her head in her knees next to robin. they both hear steve trying to pick up girls which is failing miserably.

"and another one bites the dust. you are 0-for-six, popeye." robin says putting a mark on her white board making kayla look at them. "yeah, yeah, I can count." steve says turning to robin. "you know that means you suck." robin says smiling. "yep, I can read too." steve says crossing his arms. "since when?" kayla says standing up walking over to them. "it's this stupid hat. i am telling you, it is blowing my best feature." steve says angry. "yeah, company policy is a real drag." kayla says rolling her eyes. "you know it's a crazy idea but have you ever considered, not trying to pick up girls?" robin says raising her eyebrows. "no, i'm not giving up." steve says turning around looking at the girls walking up to the counter, attempting to flirt with them and failing again.

robin and kayla sit back down at the table in the back room. "doesn't that bother you?" robin asks her. "what do you mean?" kayla says confused. "him flirting with other girls right in front of you?" robin says crossing her arms. "well, first, we aren't dating and second, i can't stop him." she says grabbing a bag of fruit snacks from her bag. "maybe you could tell him how you feel, that will stop him." robin says smiling. "no, robin. i won't make the first move, every time i did that, it got no where." kayla says sitting up. "plus i don't even think he likes me like that." kayla says as her smile fades away. "hm, that's not what i've been told." robin says standing up and walking out the serve customers smiling. kayla looks at her confused but then realizes what she just said.

wait, did steve tell robin he has feelings for kayla?

kayla is sitting next to steve, staring off into her thoughts. "kayla? hey, are you okay?" steve says waving his hand in front of her face. she gasps at his hand movement. "what?" she says out of her thoughts. "i said are you okay? you went away for a second." steve says concerned. "yeah i'm fine" kayla says putting on a fake smile.
