ACT II

"He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."

—Friedrich Nietzsche

Whether you want to admit it or not, at one point in our lives, we've all been afraid of monsters.

It doesn't matter if they live under the bed.

Or lurk in the shadows on the walls.

Or make the floorboards creak at night.

They all instill the same mind-numbing fear in our hearts. They all make us look over our shoulders constantly. They all brought us to tears over the years, too. But eventually, we outgrow these monsters.

We stop guarding against them and continue on with our lives, not giving them that much thought. But are we ever truly free of them? Or are we only gearing up to face a far scarier breed of monster?

What about the monsters we unknowingly interact with everyday? After all, you never know for sure which of those smiling faces actually hold a dark secret.

The kind gentleman who pulled out a chair for you could be an abusive spouse.

The respectable politician you look up to could be filling his pocket with embezzled funds.

The very hands of policemen, who vow to serve and protect, may be stained with the blood of the innocent.

Even your closest, most loyal friend may not be who you think they are.

That's just how life and society works.

Every single one of us have their own special blend of monstrosity. Some people just flawlessly disguise their monsters and blend in with everyone else.

We have different ways of dealing with our monsters. Some try to control them and reign them in. Others--like me--embrace them, using them to their full advantage.

Not to brag but the latter ones are the deadliest. Not just to their victims, but also to those whose sworn duty is to deal with them.

They say that to stop a monster, at best, you must think like one.

At worst, you must become one.

It's up to you whether you choose to accept this reality or not. To open your eyes and see the darkness lingering around everyone else. . .or to remain in the dark by yourself.

But make no mistake, darling, monsters are as real as they come. You need only look in the mirror to get a glimpse of one standing on the brink of an abyss. All it takes is one little push.

And then, it's the point of no return.

Now, are you ready to find out which people you've come to know and love have fallen into the abyss?
