"It's never going to stop.
Give me your best shot.
Batter up."
╰── ⋅ ⋅ ── ✩ ── ⋅ ⋅ ──╯We walked down the hallway for a long, long time. I trailed behind everyone while they all talked about who knows what. I was lost in my own train of thought: Eddie. God, I felt pathetic. Julie Byers is stuck in a secret Russian base, but what's she thinking about? Her boyfriend! Might as well tattoo Eddie's name directly on my forehead.
"Hey, you hear that?" Robin asked, bringing me from my thoughts.
"The walkie!" Dustin said.
He pulled it out of Erica's backpack and Robin listened to it closely, repeating some of the words. "It's the code."
"Wherever that broadcast is coming from, it's close," Dustin told us.
"And if there's one thing we know about that signal," Robin continued, "it can reach the surface. Let's go."
We hustled down the hallway as quickly and quietly as we could. After another five minutes, we reached a split in the hallway. We turned only to see a bunch of Russians roaming around. We all gathered as tightly as we could behind some red thing, trying to stay invisible.
"I saw it!" Erica whispered. "First floor, northwest."
"Saw what?" I asked.
"The comms room," she explained.
"You saw the comms room?" Steve asked.
"Correct!" Erica whisper-yelled, rolling her eyes.
"Are you sure?" Dustin questioned.
"Positive. The door was open for a second. And I saw a bunch of lights and machines and shit in there."
"That could be a hundred different things," Steve said.
"I'll take those odds," Robin told him.
The five of us made it into the comms room without being seen. I don't know how we managed to do it. But someone was at the controls when we entered the room. He stood, staring at us intently.
Robin started speaking Russian to him and he replied to her, obviously confused by his facial expressions. He suddenly put his hand on his gun and Steve started screaming before running straight at him. They wind up in a full blown fight until Steve grabbed something and knocked him upside the head, knocking him unconscious.
"Dude!" Dustin yelled. "You did it! You won a fight!"
He bent down to take keys off the guys belt and Erica asked him what he's doing, causing them to start bickering. Steve and I just stared at each other. These kids were bound to drive us to insanity if this so-called adventure didn't.
"Guys," Robin said. "There's something up there."
We hadn't realized she even walked away. We followed her and looked through the doors at some giant contraption pointing a beam through the wall. I was guessing it was creating a gate to the upside down by the way the wall looked. Go figure.
We walked back down the stairs explaining to Robin about how we know what it is and it's bad, but when we returned to the comms room we saw that the Russian Steve knocked out was gone. Alarms started blaring.
"Oh, shit," I groaned
We started running from the guards in a panic, eventually winding up in a back room. Steve and I had our backs on the door, grinding our feet into the floor to keep it shut. The guards were slamming against it. Steve and I shared a look. We wouldn't be able to hold them for much longer.
