there were two simultaneous events tonight.
first of all, there was an upscale dinner for all the family elders in the main house. you had no idea what exactly they wanted to discuss and they wouldn't tell you or kiyoomi.
but that didn't matter to the two of you because you would be in another place at the time of the dinner- at the second event of the night.
there was a party tonight, mainly for all the acquaintances your age. you, kiyoomi, cousins, friends, teammates. it was fairly limited to people that were going to be at the wedding. but you'd told your closer friends that they could bring people along if they liked.
you thought bachelorettes were tacky. kiyoomi had thoughts along the same line. so you'd been advised by your wedding planner to throw one joint party instead of none at all.
you were to leave the main house soon after all the guests had arrived to go to the party venue- which was komori's family villa. kiyoomi's best man had volunteered to take care of everything for tonight despite you insisting to bear part of the costs.
shiori had told you she would be arriving with her younger sister when she arrived. so you were going to be travelling with a couple of your other friends.
you didn't really care, since the drive was barely ten minutes long and you were going to get ready there anyway.
but what you did care about was that kiyoomi's mother had requested to meet you before you left the house.
you'd immediately changed into clothes suitable enough to see your to-be mother in law. the woman was very fond of you ever since you were a child, always showering you with gifts and treating you like the daughter she never had.
you hoped your equation with her was going to stay the same. but you knew it would change at least a little. so you hoped it'd change in a good way.
kiyoomi's mother was overseeing the setting of the table in the dining room, making sure the plates lay in concurrent circles and the glasses were just as far from one another as they were supposed to be.
she instructed the help politely but her voice had an undertone of sternness. when her sharp gaze met yours though, she smiled warmly.
"auntie", you smiled back before you embraced her, trying not to show how nervous you were.
"how are you?", she asked when she pulled away, brushing your hair aside, "nervous?"
you nodded yes, and she laughed a little, "come with me"
she gave a few final instructions to the staff before leading you away towards the part of the house where your mother had had a room prepared for her.
you walked into the large bedroom with her, now all the more nervous as she walked over to the cabinet beside the dressing table.
"sit", she said in a reassuring way, a smile to go with it, "i'll be there in a minute"
from the cabinet, she took out a key and headed into the closet. she came back out with a small, smooth black leather box in her hands. your heart beat sped up.
the box flipped open stiffly. your lips parted.
the diamond before you was- for one, huge. an oval engagement ring with exquisite attention to detail. it was studded with smaller cut diamonds, laced with a pristine yet subtle shade of gold.
it was beautiful, but that wasn't what made it important. it was the sakusa family ring.
you'd seen the woman in front of you wearing it for several years, but you'd never expected that it would be passed on to you. colour rushed to your face.
