So, for some random reason, I really like this chapter. Also, I have no idea where this Kyle character came from. He just sorta popped up and originally was only going to have one line. But then I started describing him... and now he's a main character. But he's pretty cool so I'm ok with that.

Chapter Eight

Romantic Feedings

When Colton and I enter Mr. Emerson’s class later that day, the first words out of our teacher’s mouth are: “Looks like some people finally hooked up.”

Thankfully we’re the first ones in the classroom, but that doesn’t stop us both from blushing. I roll my eyes and say, “Not likely.”

I grab Colton’s arm and take it off of my shoulders. He hands me my bag. I sit down and he takes the seat in front of me.

“That’s good.” Mr. Emerson says. “I need you two to work hard this summer; can’t have you off making out in a closet somewhere.”

Unfortunately, a large crowd of students is entering the room and manage to hear the end of Mr. Emerson’s comment. Several boys wolf whistle.

The back of Colton’s neck turns a flaming red. I’m sure my face probably matches my hair. I slide down in my seat, wishing I could disappear.

“Yes, yes, I’m sure we’re all very engrossed in Mr. And Mrs. Pearce’s social lives. However, it’s time to focus on something not raging with hormones (unless you’re Shakespeare): literature.” Mr. Emerson says, trying to settle the class down.

“Mr. Emerson,” A boy named Kyle raises his hand. He’s one of Colton’s friends and regularly sits with him, Adrienna, and I at lunch. He has dirty blonde hair and drowsy, sky-colored eyes.

“Yes, Kyle?” Mr. Emerson only feels the need to use last names when talking to Colton or I, and even then he doesn’t even get mine right.

“No offense, but it’s the last week of school. No one wants to do work. We’d all rather hear about Colton and Cassidy.” He simpers at Colton and I.

Adrienna, who is sitting in front of Kyle, rolls her eyes and turns sideways at her desk. “No we wouldn’t. We can hear all about them at lunch.”

The room once-again fills with wolf whistles.

“Right.” Mr. Emerson says, adopting his usual stance of holding his hands behind his back and pacing the length of the room. “Well, why don’t we use the Pearces as an example? Can anyone think of any cases in classic or popular literature in which the main characters begin in a rivalry, yet end up together?”

“You mean fall in love.” A girl in the front row corrects.

“No, Alicia, I mean together. You don’t necessarily need to be in love to end up together,” he frowns to himself, “although it does help the process.”

“How ‘bout Ron and Hermione?” Kyle asks, yawning.
