Chapter Twenty-Two
Lovesick Fools
I, Cassidy Carlson, am kissing Colton Pearce in my car after sobbing out my heart onto his chest.
This is, like, the best day ever.
He’s warm and sweet and tastes like almonds.
I could get used to this.
After several long moments, we draw apart. His hands are tangled in my long hair and mine are around his neck.
“That was,” Colton gasps, “unexpected.”
“Yeah,” I agree, my brain blissfully fuzzy.
“How can it be unexpected for you?” Colton laughs. “You kissed me!”
“Details, details.” I grin stupidly at him and he returns it.
We stay like that for a minute until Colton breaks the silence.
“So…does this mean you like me?”
“Way to ruin the mood, Pearce.” I smirk and lean back, away from him.
He frowns. “Hey! I was only wondering.”
I shrug. “Wondering killed the walrus.” I adjust so I’m sitting on my bent legs in the space between the seats. “Ouch.”
Something poked me.
I search through my pockets until I find the culprit: Alec, the paperclip snake. “Hi there buddy.” I stroke his head.
Colton stares at me. “You still have that?”
“Well, yeah.” I feel my cheeks heat up. Is it weird I kept it? I feel like since I have a thing for the guy who gave it to me, it isn’t that strange.
Slowly, Colton bends closer to me and lays a gentle kiss on my lips. “I love being able to do that. And it’s really sweet that you still have it.” He adds as an afterthought.
I laugh and settle into my own seat. Something catches my eye near my feet and I reach down and grab it. It’s a shoelace. Getting an idea, I wind it through Alec’s head and then tie the loose ends of the shoelace together. I throw the circular contraption over my rearview mirror. Colton and I watch as Alec leisurely revolves on his makeshift string.
“Now he can see what an uptight driver you are.” Colton remarks.
I shoot him a sharp look and start the car. “Are you still on that?”
“Well it’s true! What speed do you go when the sign says twenty-five?”
