𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝐀𝐅𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐒𝐀𝐌𝐇𝐀𝐈𝐍, Elisa woke up with an ache she could not stop feeling. If only for an instant she had seen Khael in her dreams. He was frowning at her with pain in his eyes.
It's okay to let people in. His haunting voice consoled her. Not everyone is destined to die.
Like you? She wanted to ask, bitterness tainting her tongue. She wanted to scream at the unfairness of it all. Why didn't he get to live?
Because I chose you. I will always choose you. She could almost hear his voice. Elisa wanted to forget her pain but she wanted to always remember Khael, her best friend.
"Lady Elisa? Are you alright?" A soft yet concerned voice snapped her out of her thoughts. Daphne Greengrass sat herself at the edge of Elisa's bed. "You were crying in your sleep and thrashing around."
Pansy Parkinson took up the other space, an equally worried look in her eyes. It didn't take a genius to figure out that their new roommate had her own demons.
"What?" Elisa couldn't think of anything else to say as her trembling hand reached up to touch at her eyes only to feel wetness.
Had she been crying? How long had she been asleep?
"I'm fine." Elisa's voice was curt, bordering on harsh as she sat up. She stared at Daphne in silence for a few moments before speaking up. "...I'm sorry for waking you up."
"No! It's fine, we were already awake." Pansy moved almost immediately to console her but hesitated as she reached out for her.
"Don't apologize for something like that." Daphne's voice was kind, concern still painted her features as she moved closer. "We're roommates, so we're bound to care for each other."
Care....? Did they care for her? They didn't even know her. Since the day she found out who her father was, Elisa had always considered herself a monster. It never occurred to her that no one else would.
Daphne and Pansy couldn't help but feel even sadder at the stunned look on their roommates face. They didn't know what she thought but they could easily imagine it. Maybe she thought they would hate her or treat her as a monster.
"Oh." The quiet whisper escaped Elisa as she moved to get up. "I should get ready." She moved as if on autopilot, her eyes dazed and the dark rings under her eyes stood out.
Could she have friends? Was it even possible for a person like her? She would always be a monster.
Both girls, much like Caelum, could not get their mind off of the girl as she sat a few seats away from them, pushing her food around.
It was a little bit concerning, at first they thought that she hated them, that she refused to make friends with wizards and witches, especially after witnessing how she chewed Theo a new one.
Speaking of Theo, he sat in his personally claimed spot next to the same girl who had ripped him a new one like nothing had happened.
Blaise and Draco were watching in mild concern as they spotted the dark circles under her eyes. Slytherins took care of their own, even when their own was a victim of two wars who could barely get through one night without nightmares.
Everyone was watching her as she was completely oblivious to the world around her and the suffocating silence.
Caelum had no fear and no problem sitting himself next to his soulmate as he placed an apple in front of her. "Don't eat it if you don't want to." He smiled at her as she finally looked up from her plate.
From the teacher's table, Remus Lupin watched with wary eyes. The dynamic was very different but it reminded him of so many things at once but it reminded him especially of Regulus and Diana.
She took the apple and turned in her hands three times before biting into it. "You don't have to baby me." She grumbled after swallowing her bite of apple. The sourness of it was comforting, she liked green apples.
"I'm not." He smiled at her once again. "Just one friend looking after another."
"We're friends?" She asked him, raising an eyebrow at him as her dark brown eyes stared at him intensely.
Caelum smiled brightly at her, not even faltering. "Of course, we are." He was concerned about her. They all were. All that mattered was her feeling better.
"That's unfair. I wanted to be her first friend here." Theo grumbled inaudibly to Blaise as the rest of their friend group snorted in amusement.
Caelum tilted his head to the side as he smiled at her once more. "I ahve to have you up to par for potions, of course. I've never seen another person as brilliant as you when it comes to potions."
"I like potions, it's not that difficult." Elisa shrugged off his comment, glancing down at the apple in her hands. "Plus, if I'm the best then you probably weren't watching close enough."
"I don't care about anyone else's talent or their academic wisdom. Yours is all that I care about." Caelum shook his head as he leaned towards the table. "So, in my eyes, you're always the best."
Elisa's eyes widened at him as she turned her face away from him. "Oh fuck off, Black."
Pansy's shoulders were shaking from trying not to laugh so badly. Blaise, Draco, and Theo had no reservations. Daphne was nice enough to at least not laugh out loud.
"I'm serious. You don't believe me? I'll prove it to you." He said, his eyes burning bright. "Just you wait, Elisa Di Angelo, I'll prove to you that you're the best."
Elisa couldn't help the fluttering of her heart at his words. No one had ever genuinely thought she was the best.
Damn Caelum Black and his smiles. Damn Caelum Black and his smooth words. Damn Caelum Black for making me feel something that makes me wish for more.
