Chapter 27: All's Well That Ends Well
The play did not suck.
It might go down as being the weirdest version of Romeo and Juliet ever performed on any stage, but it definitely didn't suck.
Some of the highlights were:
The party scene where no one knew what to do, since it was a huge dance number choreographed by Kimmie. Who stood alone, dancing her heart out, while Jude and Taylor who did know the routine, but only as the Prince and the Nurse, not as Romeo and Juliet, stumbled along, not doing too horrible. While of course, the rest of the people onstage kind of swayed to the music, Harrison skipping around without too big of a worry how crazy he looked, Sara standing perfectly still like a stone, her hoodie up, with an apron as her costume frilly and fuzzy over her street clothes.
The balcony scene where Romeo and Juliet first declare their love, declaimed in complete whispers that no one could hear. Followed by Taylor's huge ass beautiful voice, shocking the audience as he sang Savage Garden's Truly Madly Deeply.
I'll be your dream, I'll be your wish, I'll be your fantasy
I'll be your hope, I'll be your love, be everything that you need
I love you more with every breath truly, madly, deeply do
I will be strong, I will be faithful 'cause I'm counting on
A new beginnin'
A reason for livin'
A deeper meaning, yeah
I wanna stand with you on a mountain
I wanna bathe with you in the sea
I wanna lay like this forever
Until the sky falls down on me
Matt took a video of it, capturing the look of love in Taylor's eyes as he sang to a love struck Romeo. Knowing it was a perfect snapshot illustrating his vision for including music in the show.
The fight scene with Kimmie lunging around, adding embellishments, shouting out Mercutio's lines at the perfect moments, since she'd memorized the whole play. Jasper keeping up with her, their comedic timing impeccable. Riley just trying to move out of the way of the swords, the audience roaring with laughter as he kept hiding his head under his upraised arms, squeaking with not so faked terror.
The bed scene, uncomfortable and funny and sexy. Romeo apologizing into an accidentally hot and live mic, asking for permission to touch his Juliet. Who kissed him boldly, sitting in his Romeo's lap, grinding up and down, both in boxers only, moaning louder than was decent for a high school production. Matt flashing back to Dane and Timmy, realizing you can't put gay boys who are attracted to each other in a bed scene without it moving to the left of pornography.
The scene where the Nurse counsels Juliet. Sara grimacing and repeating the lines Matt loudly fed her, making Juliet's counselor sound like she thought Juliet was the biggest idiot on the planet. Which worked, somehow.
The curtains drew slowly apart on what should be the Friar and Romeo, only to disclose the Friar and Benvolio kissing, the Friar in the young man's arms, brown monks robes hiked up to his waist, his short legs wrapped around the other actor.
Juliet and Romeo's death scene actually caused more than one audience member to cry. Romeo killing himself, Juliet discovering his body. Taylor belting out Evanescence's My Immortal.
