“No. No, no, no. This can’t be true!” She held the stick in her hands hoping and praying that what she was seeing was not at all true. It couldn’t be. They were careful. One of the burning questions in her mind, what would Shayne say about this? His displeasured words echoed through her imagination. It scared her. She knew Shayne would be better than her mind told her but…this was much different.
“Hey, Courtney.” Shayne’s voice startled her. She nearly dropped the stick in her hands and quickly hid it behind her back, facing him as he entered the front door.
“Nothing! It’s nothing!” She shouted without thought. Shayne, the oblivious guy that he was, seemed to believe her suspicious outburst and merely stared at her with confusion.
“Okay? Well, uh, are you ready to go to bed?”
“Yeah! Yeah…I…I just need to wash off my makeup.”
“Alright. I’ll be in our room.” He walked off and into their bedroom without a second thought. The minute she knew he was gone, she rushed to the bathroom and continued to stare at the stick.
“I’m pregnant. I’m pregnant? I can’t be pregnant!” She kept her voice relatively quiet so as to not alert Shayne but the panic was still evident. “And to think this night was going so well…”
She laid her arms out on the sink in front of her and placed her forehead against them. She kept trying to wake herself up but, no matter what she did, it didn’t seem to work. Despite her hopes that the pregnancy would magically disappear, nothing like that happened.
“How could this happen? We used protection every single time! It’s always effective!” She rummaged through the cabinets and found a box of condoms. She read the back and sighed heavily. “...97% of the time. Wait, it’s not effective 3% of the time!?”
“Courtney?” A knock on the bathroom door startled her. She quickly hid everything she had before remembering the fact that she locked the door behind her. “You okay? You’re talking to yourself.”
“All good! Yeah! I’ll be out in a minute!” She quickly cleaned herself up and, as an added measure and with hatred for that 3%, she threw the stick and condoms in the trash and took the bag out into the dumpster.
For the rest of the night, she was in full panic mode. While Shayne was sleeping soundly next to her, his arms wrapped around her like usual, she was thinking about what this meant for, not only her, but their relationship. What would he say? What would he think? Would this change everything he said on the hike? It’s safe to say that she got little to no sleep that night.
“Olivia! Olivia!” Courtney quickly ran around the office looking for her the next morning. She nearly ran into her when she rounded the corner.
"Hey, Courtney. What's-"
"I need to talk to you!"
"O-okay, about what-"
"Come with me!" She quickly grabbed Olivia's arm and pulled her across the office and into the restroom. Olivia watched as she leaned against the door and sighed.
"You want to explain why you're so energetic this morning?" She asked.
"Okay. Okay, look I…you can't tell ANYONE about this but…well…I'm pregnant."
"You're…wait, is it Shayne's?"
"Y- No, actually, I'm having an affair with Ian. Surprise!"
"Okay. Well, are you going to tell Shayne? Or, at least, have you?"
"No, why?" Her mood switched quickly to a much nicer one as opposed to the sarcastic reaction she had previously.
"Uh, because he's the father. He deserves to know, doesn't he?"
