It didn't take long for Danny to pack, after all, besides the weapons his mother gave him, he didn't have anything but his clothes to begin with, he simply packed an extra change of clothes and a tooth brush to stuff in a spare backpack that Grover found, he even made sure his bracelets were secured around his wrists, after he finished packing and made sure he had everything, he hurried to the camp store to meet the others
The camp store loaned Danny and Percy one hundred dollars in mortal money and twenty golden drachmas, these coins were as big as girl scout cookies and has images of various Greek gods stamped on one side and the empire state building on the other, the ancient mortal drachmas had been silver, Chiron told them, but Olympians never use less than pure gold, Chiron and Diana said the coins might come in handy for non-mortal transactions, whatever that meant, Diana gave Annabeth and them each a canteen of nectar and a Ziploc bag full of ambrosia squares, to be used only in emergencies if they were seriously hurt, it was god food, Chiron reminded us, it would cure us of almost any injury, but it was lethal to mortals, to much of it would make a half-blood very, very feverish, an overdose would burn them up, literally
Annabeth was bringing her magic Yankees cap, which she told had been her twelfth-birthday present from her mom, she carried a book on famous classical architecture written in Ancient Greek to read when she got bored, and a long bronze knife, hidden in her shirt sleeve, Danny was sure the knife would get them busted the first time they went through a metal detector
Grover wore his fake feet and his pants to pass as human, he wore a green rasta-cap, because when it rained his curly hair flattened and you could just see the tip of his horns, his bright orange backpack was full of scrape metal and apples to snack on, in his pocket was a set of reed pipes his daddy goat had carved for him, even though he only knew two songs, Mozarts Piano Concerto no.12 and Hilary Duffs so yesterday, both of which sounded really bad on reed pipes
They waved goodbye to the other campers, took one last look at the strawberry fields, the ocean, and the big house, then hiked up to Half-Blood Hill to the tall pine tree that used to be Thalia, daughter of Zeus
Chiron was waiting for them in his wheel chair, with Diana standing beside him, next to them stood the surfer dude Percy had seen when he was recovering in the sick room, according to Grover, the guy was the camps head of security, he supposedly had eyes all over his body so he could never be surprised, today though, he was wearing a chauffeurs uniform, so Danny could only see extra peepers on his hands, face and neck
"this is Argus" Chiron told them "he will drive you into city, and, er, will keep an eye on things"
Danny suddenly heard footsteps behind them and turned around to see Luke running up the hill, carrying a pair of basketball shoes
"hey!" he painted "glad i caught you"
Annabeth blushed, the way she always did when Luke was around, Danny snickered, causing Annabeth to glare at him
"just wanted to say good luck" Luke told them "and i thought, um....maybe you could use these"
He handed Percy the sneakers, which looked pretty normal, they even smelled kind of normal
"Maia" said Luke
White feathered wings sprouted out of the ankles, startling Percy so much he dropped them, Danny bent down and picked up one of them and watched as the wings flapped before folded up and disappeared
"awesome!" said Grover
Luke smiled "those served me well when i was on my quest, gift from dad, of course i don't use them much these days" his expression turned sad
