London. Kensington neighborhood. A noble family lived in a prestigious villa, the Turners. The mistress was pregnant. Assisting her was her maid Emily, a former Shakespearean actress. As soon as the baby was about to be born, Emily ran to call the nurse and, as soon as she arrived, she stayed with her to help. The labor lasted several hours and the delivery was very difficult. Mrs. Turner was losing a lot of blood and the baby didn't want to go out. Mr. Turner entered the room to hold his wife's hand, hoping with all his heart that the birth would go well. In the end, the nurse said that there was nothing more to be done, the child was turned sideways and it was impossible to get him out and the mistress would not have made it. "No, please!", moaned Mr. Turner, "Don't leave me!". His wife, shaking his hand, said to him: "Don't think about me, save the baby!", "I beg you, I don't want to lose you!", "And me I want to be able to give birth to our son! Don't think about me, make sure our little one has a good life! Me I've already lived mine!", "No, don't talk like that! You'll see, you'll be fine!","Save our son! Please save our James!". Mr. Turner, although desperate, decided to indulge his wife's last wish and helped the nurse and Emily deliver the baby. They had to open Mrs. Turner's belly and let him go through there. As soon as he was taken out, the nurse washed him well and a few seconds later the baby cried. He was alive and he was a boy. He was given the name his mother had chosen for him a few moments before. Mrs. Turner barely had time to hear her son cry and see him in Emily's arms, and then, with a smile on her face, her eyes went blank. The maid, in tears, handed the baby to Mr. Turner, but he, desperate, yelled, "Keep him away from me! He is the cause for everything! I never want to see him again!". And he left the room slamming the door. Emily was left alone with the baby and the nurse, shocked by Mr. Turner's behavior. It was certainly not the child's fault that Mrs. Turner was no longer there, unfortunately such things could not be foreseen.

During the funeral, Emily was left alone in the house caring for the baby. He was very sweet, and when he cried she felt like hugging him for hours. As soon as Mr. Turner got home, he shut himself up in his study and stayed there for hours. After a while, Emily knocked on his door, asking him if he wanted his son with him, but he replied furiously: "I told you to keep him away from me! If it wasn't that my wife wanted it so much, I wouldn't even keep it here! I do it only for her, because it was her last wish! But don't think I want to take care of him! You and the other servants will take care of it! Whatever you teach him, I don't care! Just as long as he is not near me". Emily, shocked, closed the door and went to her room, taking the baby with her. Once there, she sat on the bed, crying desperately with the baby in her arms. The little one began to cry in despair, probably he had sensed his father's anger. "Don't worry, little one", Emily told him softly, "Your dad doesn't hate you, he's just upset about what happened. Do not worry, until the waters have calmed down, I will take care of you. I will teach you everything I know". Then she put him in the crib and sang him a sweet lullaby to make him sleep. When he fell asleep, Emily gave him a kiss on the forehead and said: "Sweet dreams, James. May life smile at you in the future".

A few years passed. James was growing up well, with Emily and the other servants. She taught him to read and write and in the meantime she transmitted to him all the passion of Shakespearean works, another taught him to play the harpsichord in the hall, still others taught him to play the flute and recite wonderful poems. All the servants in that house were educated on something and passed on all their knowledge to little James, who enthusiastically learned everything he was taught. The only bad thing in that house was his father. He hardly ever saw him and the few times he met him he was drunk and angry. He had never hugged his son even once, and when James tried to hug his father, the only thing he received from him was a good dose of chopsticks on the back, and was then chased away badly. That time he was very upset and for hours he didn't want to leave his room, crying desperately. He had no friend, his only point of reference for him was Emily. She loved him very much and always cheered him up. One day, while he was in his room pondering why his father hated him so much, the maid came in and sat down beside him. "Why does my dad hate me? What have I done to him?", James asked. "Oh, honey", Emily replied fondly, "It's not your fault. Unfortunately, after your mom left us, he was never the same and he blames everyone. But rest assured, he doesn't really hate you. You'll see that he'll soon come to his senses", "Really, aunt Emily?", "Yes, my little one. Have faith". Emily gave him a caress, then read him a Shakespeare story to cheer him up.
