After a long journey, James finally arrived at his destination. Seen from the outside, the place didn't look bad, maybe there was a chance for him to be comfortable there. As soon as he entered, a lady approached him and said: "Good evening. You must be James Turner, right?", "Yes, madam", "Very good. I'm Mrs. Isabelle Brown, I'll be your history teacher. Come on, I'll take you to the manager, Mr. Anderson. Then I'll show you your room". James had the director accompany him for college enrollment, then Mrs. Brown accompanied him to what became his new room. "You'll have a roommate", she explained then, "He's a nice guy, I'm sure you'll get along", "Thank you, madam", "Now you can unpack your bags, as soon as you're done, come back to me and I'll show you the rest of the school", "Okay, thank you". Left alone in his room, James arranged his things and sat down on his new bed. The first impact in that place was positive, he had met one of the teachers and she seemed a really friendly and nice person. He couldn't wait to start his first day of class. He started to get up when someone entered the room. "Hi, are you new?", he asked. He was supposed to be her roommate. "Yes, I just arrived. My name is James, very pleased", James replied. The other guy shook his hand and continued: "My pleasure, James. My name is Roger. I couldn't wait to have someone here in my room with me, I've been alone for too long", "Really? Well, I'm here now, why don't we become friends?", "That would be great, you seem like a cool guy. Not like some people I've met so far". James smiled. He really hoped he had a trusted friend he could rely on and Roger seemed like a good guy. He greeted him and went to Mrs Brown to show the rest of the school. After the tour, the teacher gave him a sheet with the times of the various lessons of the week together with another sheet with all the activities that could be carried out within the college. James thanked her and went to his room. As soon as he arrived, he started chatting with Roger. He too, like James, was there with the aim of studying and getting good grades to have a good future as soon as he finished school. He also loved reading poetry and much more. Suddenly, a tear fell from Roger's face. James was about to ask him why, but he anticipated him: "Sorry, it's just that the only positive thing in my life so far is the lessons in this place. I study and work hard, but nobody talks to me and many make fun of me. You are the only one who really understands me so far and I am really happy that we have a lot in common. Here I have not found anyone else to confide in completely. Thank you for being here with me". James instinctively hugged him, patted him on the shoulder and said with a wink: "From now on we can count on each other, no one will dare to annoy the couple of friends James and Roger". They both laughed, pleased with their new friendship. Suddenly, the door swung open. It was Mrs. Brown, who had come to tell both of their that she was bedtime. As soon as she closed the door, James got under the covers and, before going to sleep, said, "I've never had any friends before. I'm glad I was sent here", "Sent? Aren't you here of your own free will?", "No, my father no longer wanted me in the house and kicked me out", "I'm sorry, it must have been hard for you", "Yeah. And you? Did they choose your parents for you?", "We actually decided it together, they want me to build a bright future for me". James sighed. Roger, unlike him, had a loving family and good parents. He, however, apart from the affection of his servants, had only aunt Emily, now deceased. He quickly wiped a tear away with his pink handkerchief, then held it close, said goodnight to Roger and fell asleep.
The next morning they went to class together. For James it was the first day and he was very excited. There was also the history lesson with Mrs. Brown that day and James listened to the whole lesson until the end. He was really eager to learn everything. After class, James and Roger went out into the garden to get some air. "You did well on your first day", Roger told him. "Yeah, not bad", James replied, "I think my favorite subject will be history. I really like", "Do you like the subject or the teacher?", "What are you saying? Come on, stop it!". They laughed a lot making more jokes. Suddenly, a little older guy came in front of them. "Hey, are you the new one?", he said to James. "Yes, and who are you?", he replied. He, grinning, continued: "I'm Arthur Darling, model student. What have you come to this place for? It can immediately see from your face that you are incapable". James, infuriated, replied: "But how dare you? You don't even know me!", "There is no need, it just look at you to understand everything! Now excuse me, I have a fencing lesson soon. And you, Roger, don't forget to take my books to my room. See you later, losers!". As he left, James wanted to slap him, but Roger stopped him: "Wait, don't do that. It's not worth it with that one there. He has everyone on his side, better keep your head down", "But that's not fair! He has no right to do that!", "I know, he is considered the best college student, but unfortunately he is also the baddest". James hated rudeness and Arthur was a real boor. He decided that he would teach him a good lesson, and he thought of doing it by passing him in his studies. He would then enroll in fencing class too, so one day he would beat him in front of the whole school to make a big fool of himself.
