"why did you kiss me?" bruce blurted. vance froze, clearing his throat. he looked up to meet bruce's gaze. "what?" he chewed on the inside of his lip. "why did you kiss me? last night. we were alone. there was no reason—"
"it was an accident. i wasnt thinking straight. it— it didn't mean anything." oh. "right, of course." bruce nodded slowly. of course it didn't mean anything. why would it? its not like he wanted it to mean anything. right? vance inhaled. "yeah. uhm, sorry." he pokes the pancakes with his fork. now, the silence was really uncomfortable. regret flooded through vance. he shouldn't have done that — bruce didn't like him that way. bruce wouldnt like him that way — he could do so much better, and god that hurt to think about. he took a deep breath. "lets just forget about it, okay?" bruce nodded, but he knew he wouldn't be able to just forget. it wouldn't stop bugging him. maybe, what he needed to forget about it was a different kiss. that was logical. he looked up to see vance staring at him — he seemed to stare a lot. "what?"
"huh? oh." vance cleared his throat. "sorry. i was just— thinking." he got his wallet out, getting some cash. he set it on the table. "uhm, let's be on our way, yeah?" bruce nodded, standing up. he hoped it would be less awkward once they left. unfortunately for him, it was not. the whole walk to bruce's house was awkwardly silent. when they got to bruce's house, vance finally spoke up. "uhm, so, there's this party next weekend.." he trailed off. "and.. i was wondering if you'd go with me?" he gave a lopsided grin. bruce knew his parents wouldn't exactly approve — but he couldn't bring himself so say no. he figured he could sneak out if he really had to. "yeah, sure." he smiled, vance's eyes practically lit up. "cool! — cool. i'll, uhm. i'll pick you up on saturday, seven-thirty? i mean we'll probably see each other again before then so i guess we don't have to make plans for that bit now— we can always just cross that bridge when we get there of course— i just—" he rambled on, but bruce cut him off. "that sounds great, vance."
he can't help but find his rambling a little cute — which is definitely a normal thing for friends to do! vance looked up to meet his gaze, a small blush crossing his face. "okay. uhm— thanks." he offered a smile. "thanks for inviting me," bruce gave a smile back — he can't help but notice the blush on vance's cheeks getting darker. "yeah, well, you're my fake boyfriend, so.. whatever. its whatever—" vance said quickly. "i need to get home — goodnight!" before bruce could say anything more, vance is speed walking away from the house. he watches him walk away with a smile of adoration — normal platonic adoration, of course! he steps inside and closes the door behind himself.
he takes a deep breath, trying to shake vance from his thoughts. although, it wasn't working very well. he headed upstairs. it was normal to think about your friends a lot, right? especially when they'd done things like pretending to be in a relationship for you. yeah, that was it. bruce was just thankful. surely, being thankful made him feel and think this way. it made him think about how nice the other actually was, how pretty he was. how his lips felt on— woah woah. he swallows, sitting down on his bed. he feels his face heat up there was no way that was just being thankful — not even he was that oblivious. he lays down and puts a pillow over his face. shit, had he fallen for vance hopper?
