After weeks of things becoming normal again, I start to notice small differences in Chasity. She was getting up earlier than usual, leaving before I woke up, not home when I came home from work, and staying out later past her normal bedtime. Every time I questioned her about her changes, she'd change topics and plaster on a smile like nothing was wrong. But I knew better than that. That morning before she could dart out the door, I caught her arm to stop her. She turned to stare at me as her eyes wavered. I smiled and held up my keys. "I'm taking you today sugarplum." Before she could say anything, I walked past her with her protesting up until we got to my car.
I opened the door for her and nodded. "Get in."
Reluctantly, she got in. Just as I closed the door, I could see her go into her bag and pull out her phone. I casually walked over to the driver's side, giving her some time to text whoever it was she was scared of before I got in because by the time I opened the door, Chasity had flung her phone into her bag. I acted as though I didn't notice anything and took her to school. "I'll be on time to pick you up."
"You don't have to do that, Ahsa," she says with a wavered nervous smile. "I know how busy you can get later in the day."
I stared at her until she became even more nervous. "You're right," I said. I turned off the car. "I'll stay here instead and wait for you. You have only two classes anyways, right? I don't mind waiting." Her eyes start to water. "What's wrong?"
Chasity shook her head and hung it low. "Nothing! It's nothing. I'm going in now."
Chasity quickly exits and heads in. I watched her dodge the people in her way, all the way until I no longer saw her. I then looked around the surrounding area to see if I could pick up any suspicious looking person and when I didn't, I got back in my car and went to park it before coming back to wait for her classes to end. It was boring but I didn't have a choice. I wanted to know why the hell she was acting the way she did and so suddenly after she had come back. When her classes finally ended, I intently watched the doorway for her. After most of the students left, I got anxious. I went looking for her and asked if anyone saw her leaving.
"Chasity? She didn't even come to class. It was, so, unlike her."
I stared at the three confused as the two nodded in agreement. "She usually sits next to us in class. I thought she was late or something."
"Thanks," I said as I whipped around and pulled out my phone just to receive a message from her.
Chasity: I'm sorry. I just need some time alone right now. Please don't hate me
I stared at the message confused as ever.
Me: Get your ass home right now or don't come home at all.
I power walked to my car and slammed the door after myself. I glared down at my phone waiting for her reply back.
Chasity: I'll be back home tonight. I promise
I went to throw my phone but stopped myself. I slammed the phone down onto the passenger seat and started my car and left the parking lot. I sped all the way home, angry. I entered our apartment complex, livid. Old man was pacing back and forth at the top of the stairs and when he saw me, he didn't say anything. I brushed past him and slammed the door and I just stood there seething. Chasity didn't return home until three in the morning and had left before the time I would normally wake up at.
She was like that for days. She didn't even talk to me, look at me, message me, nothing. So, I decided I wasn't going to give two fucks either. I let the refrigerator go nearly empty and went about my day like I would as though we weren't living together, and it was just me. I ignored her just like how she did me and when she got fed up with it, she had the fucking audacity to ask me where the fuck I was going. I glared at the hand that stopped me from leaving the apartment and giving her the same glare when I stared straight into her eyes. "Get your fucking hands off me," I warned.
