The ring of the bell rushed through the halls, bouncing off the old stone walls of the elementary school. All of the kids got up from their seat, one after another. It was always hectic after the bell rang for recess, and Tim usually got stepped all over by the older kids. Danielle got up and brushed her dress off, and smiled at him.
"Would you like to play with me when we get out there?" Her small cheeks formed dimples when she smiled.
Tim's cheeks blushed pale pink. "S-Sure!" He giggled.
No one had ever asked him to play with them before, much less a girl. He was genuinely surprised that she would spend time with him knowing how "unpopular" he was. Normal people would never want to be caught even standing next to him.
The girl was definitely not normal.
They filed outside behind a group of third graders, and then headed to a shaded area called the gazebo, a tall, wooden structure inhabited by fourth graders. Not just any fourth graders, however. Everyone turned to look as they entered."Look who decided to show up! Little Amish boy the second grader."
Tim flinched.
A smirk spread across the light skin of a blonde haired boy.
"Jon..." Tim slowly turned around, clenching his teeth. He held back tears.
Dani ran her tiny fingers through her bangs, and stared at the blonde haired boy, who Tim had called Jon."Excuse me?" She hissed.
Jon laughed, narrowing his eyes at her. "Well aren't you a pretty little thing." His friends hooted.
Dani growled. "You take that back. This isn't just your place. It's everyone's! We can be here if we want, meanie. Besides. You don't even know Tim. He's sweet.... and gentle." She blushed a little. "Leave us alone." She stepped forward, staring into Jon's blue eyes with anger.
Jon raised a eyebrow. "Little Amish boy here happens to be my brother. And, it is our place. Go play dolls with girly little Timmy. Or, just come kiss me." He batted his blonde eyelashes at her. His friends were nearly red with laughter.
"Ew, no! Leave me alone!" She stepped back, but Jon grabbed her wrist.
Tim didn't have time to think. He threw his fist at Jon, hitting him square in the face.
Jon dropped Dani's hand, and recoiled just a bit. His friends stopped laughing. But then resumed, this time at Jon.
He wiped his bleeding lip, and gave Tim a death glare."TIM!!!" He screeched, running after his already fleeing brother. Danielle's small body was nearly frozen with fear, but she knew she had to follow them and protect Tim.
Jon finally caught up with Tim after he tripped on a rock, and fell flat on his face. Jon was crying by then, and so was Tim.
"Jon! Don't ever touch her again!" Tim squealed, backing up.
"P-Protecting your little girlfriend, eh?" Jon wiped a tear from his cheek.
"I'm going to tell Mom! If you don't..." Tim squealed and covered his face with his dirt-covered hands, crying harder. "I hate you! How dare you try to hurt Dani!""I didn't try to hurt her you little wimp, you think she wants a little baby like you?" Jon growled, kicking Tim's small body just enough for it to hurt.
"Aaaaaah!" Tim wailed, grabbing his leg where Jon had kicked him.
"I will kill you!" Dani screamed, running at Jon and shoving her whole body weight at him, pushing him back a few inches in the dirt.
"See ya." The bell rang, and he winked and smirked, stepping back and turning around slyly, walking away along with his friends and the rest of the students.
Dani stood breathless in the grass, staring where Jon was with fear. "Ah... Tim!" She whipped around, running to Tim and immediately crouching down beside him to assess the damage. "Oh Timmy..." Her chocolate brown eyes gushed tears, and she held Tim's shaking body in her hands. "...I love you.."
