For a moment, it seemed as if all the air had been sucked from the atmosphere. Zelda could feel her heart drop into the deepest pits of her stomach.
"Goodness...almost midnight already?" The prince remarked, staring at the clocktower, whose bright yellow face illuminated where its hands were pointed. Sure enough, it was five minutes til' midnight.
Zelda quickly got up from the fountain and hurried over to Link.
"Listen, your highness, I've had a wonderful time, but I think I need to go. Farewell to you,"
But, before she could begin making her escape, Link grabbed her wrist. It was no harsh grab by any means but it was firm enough to get her to stop.
"Wait, you're leaving already?" He asked, confusion in his eyes.
Zelda opened her mouth to respond but no reply could form. At least not one that would risk exposing Revali.
"I'm just uh..."
As much as she wished this wasn't happening, it wasn't like she'd ever see much less dance with the prince again, so there was not really a point in staying.
Gathering up some strength, she pulled her wrist out of his hand.
Scooping up the front of her dress so as to not trip on it, she began running for the entrance.
"Wait, hold on!" The prince called after her, but Zelda did nothing to stop.
Teba watched the entire debacle from his hiding spot in the rose bushes, and he quickly soared into the air, intent on flying back into the palace to search for her.
Next thing Link knew, he was running after Zelda, through the door and down the hall.
Surprisingly, despite how billowy her gown was, she still managed to zip down the hall and into the ballroom. In good timing too, it'd be harder for Link to find her there.
Pushing through the various guests was a challenge and it wasn't long before the prince lost her in the crowd. His eyes remained peeled for any flashes of blue.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, pushing through the partygoers and attendants, Zelda reached the beautiful, golden staircase she'd walked down those few hours ago.
Several guests turned to look at her quizzically, wondering what on earth she could be running from.
Running up them in heels would be a challenge but it was one that she was willing to accept.
Once she'd gotten onto the higher end of the stairs, Link finally caught sight of her above the towering heads of those in the crowd.
"Hey! Wait a moment!" He called out to her again, drawing the attention of even more audience members.
The sound of his voice caused Zelda to miss a step, and trip over her own feet. Thankfully, she was able to catch herself before she could fall to the ground.
From underneath her dress, she could feel glass sliding off her foot and begin to tumble away.
Turning around, she watched as her magical shoe rolled a good distance down before settling on the lower steps.
Link was almost already at the foot of the stairs so going back to retrieve her slipper probably wouldn't be the smartest idea.
Poor Mipha; perhaps her room would get extra cleaning jobs for the next month. If only Zelda had the same shoe size as her.
As awkward as it was to sense the imbalance in her step and the cold marble floor against her bare foot, all she could do was continue running.
