At the moment, Operation: Best Friend is technically on hiatus. Whether or not that hiatus will end, Dylan couldn't say. That would all depend on when she and EJ go back to normal.

They don't fight very often, but it isn't something that never happens, either. They've had their arguments like any pair of friends. The last time they fought was over the summer before she started high school two years ago. Back then, Dylan had a few weeks in Colorado to cool off, and by the time she got back, they were ready to go back to normal.

That said, this is definitely one of their bigger fights. Not the biggest, but it's up there. They both need some time to cool off; he's upset with her for not telling him about Ricky's voicemail, and she's upset with him for breaking his promise and stealing Nini's phone. So, yes, they still need time.

All of that is fine for the most part. But there's still a problem; EJ and Dylan are both popular. When they fight, other people notice. Only half a school day had gone by, but Dylan had already overheard people speculating about why she and EJ are beefing. No one was even close to guessing why (thank goodness), but rumors are already spreading. And if there's one thing Dylan hates, it's rumors.

...About herself and her friends, that is. She'll gladly listen to rumors about other people.

"So, wait," Sitting at a cafeteria table with Jenna and some of their other friends, Dylan frowned at the worksheet in front of her. "How do I know when to use the quadratic formula and when to just factor it?"

Jenna pointed to the question. "Sometimes it'll tell you in the question. But sometimes you can just tell."

Dylan deadpanned at her. "No, sometimes you can tell. If the question doesn't tell me what to do, the question doesn't get done."

"You're going to fail your quiz with that mindset."

"It is what it is, Babes."

The rest of the girls at the table laughed. Dylan would love to be doing anything other than math during her lunch break. But despite what she told Jenna, she didn't like the idea of failing her first quiz of the semester.

...That said, when her phone buzzed on the table, she was all too eager to grab it. What she found was a text from Sayan.

Say Hey

so nini just came 2 the robotics room...

she asked me to hack her phone 2 recover a deleted message

And the message was from ricky

Dylan caught her bottom lip between her teeth. She hadn't told anyone about EJ and Nini's business. She knows she can trust her friends, but Dylan doesn't believe in sharing her best friend's business with her other best friends. So neither Jenna nor Sayan knows why she and EJ aren't talking. Not even Jordan is in the loop.
