Dylan Caley is a girl with a plan. Nothing matters more than the happiness and well-being of those closest to her. And in the case of her best friend, EJ Caswell, what made him happy was the new girlfriend he met at summer camp. As much as Dylan hates clichés, she loves seeing her best friend happy.
She was looking forward to seeing them play Troy and Gabriella onstage together. She thought they had it in the bag. So when some random rookie skater boy suddenly swooped in to steal EJ's part, Dylan was not happy. And to make matters worse, EJ was rightfully paranoid about the guy's true motives. So Dylan, being the best best friend ever, took matters into her own hands. If the skater boy thought things would be easy, Dylan's job was to prove him wrong.

Ricky Bowen is a boy with a plan. After a rocky summer break during which they left things on a "pause", he was ready to start over with Nini Salazar-Roberts. But that's not quite what happened. Instead, he ended up dumped for some guy she met at theater camp. Not the ideal way to start off junior year.
But he's not giving up. "Determined" is Ricky Bowen's middle name; he'd do whatever it took to win Nini back. Even audition for a musical despite finding it stupid when people break into song whenever something remotely dramatic happens. Unfortunately for Ricky, his plan had one big obstacle. That obstacle took the form of a pretty yet scheming busybody. Ricky had no idea what he was in for.
