Daniel only smiled at me cruelly before leaving the room after my phone call with Ava. I found myself once again on the floor, leaning against the wall, feeling like I was falling to pieces and soon to be a pile of ashes.
I thought hearing her voice might help me make through this haze. But it seemed to only make it worse. I wanted to see her. I wanted to hear her voice again and again and again. But Daniel took that from me. He took me from her and her from me.
I banged on the wall with my chains screaming, "What do you want from me?" over and over and over again.
Time went by, and I was met with nothing but silence. The silence is what always seemed to break me. It left me to nothing but my thoughts. And my thoughts tended to grow as a dark as the room I found myself in.
Finally the sound of the basement door opening echoed throughout the room. Footsteps came towards me and then a flashlight shone. I recognized Gerard standing there in sweatpants and T-shirt looking highly pissed.
"It's three a.m. Will you stop wailing?" he asked.
I slammed my head against the wall. "I'll stop wailing when you and your crazy-ass leader let me go."
"I'm sorry, but that's not likely to happen anytime soon. Daniel still has plans for you. In fact, I believe he'd like to have a word right now."
"Well," I said, "I obviously can't go up there, so—"
"Of course you can." Gerard came sauntering forward before he pulled out a ring where a number of silver keys dangled. "If you try attacking me, believe that I will stake you without an ounce of remorse. It's three a.m. and I'm in no mood to put up with your crap."
He pulled me by the elbow and I realized just how weak I was. How long had it been since my last blood supply? Or my last Mela shot? A month had passed since the days back in Newberry. A day had passed since they let Jane go. A week ago we were moments from giving up on our mission. Only if we would have, I wouldn't be here probably dying.
"I thought vampires didn't need any sleep," I grumbled. "Why are you so pissy, man? On your period?"
Gerard shoved me harshly into the wall. "I merely hate dealing with incessant young vampires. And to have an Unnatural on my hands doesn't make the situation any better. You're just as stupid as any other."
"How old are you anyway?" I asked him. I could have cared less about making small talk if it wasn't for the fact that the small talk may be exactly what I needed right now. I needed to know as much as I could about these vampires, including what made Daniel's Beta tick. "I know you knew Angelina, and she's not that much older than me. She was a vampire when you two met, right?"
His grip tightened around my arm as he dug his nails into my flesh. "Angelina is no longer a primary subject in my life, so I don't see any reason to bring her up."
So this was it. Any mention of Angelina made the little vampire man flinch. He acted like some big tough guy capable of anything, but really his emotions were as frazzled as any other vampire's.
"Fine," I cleared my throat. "But I mean you're the one who left her behind so you could be the servant of an Original who will never truthfully give a damn about your individual existence."
