second period started at 8:20. we walked just across the hall to the english class. the classroom was somewhat small, with only medium-length desks, and long window and a whiteboard.

"I sit in the back." jake said. I nodded and sqeezed through the desks, gripping onto my laptop and books.

the lecture went on for the hour about poetry and old english literature. jake and I passed notes back and forth, talking about random things like the latest drama he heard about and the last movie I watched.

then, interrupting the professor, the door handle clicks open. a tall boy with a black undercut walks in, holding his laptop and textbook in one hand below his waist.

"who's that?" I whisper to jake.

"thats just jay. he's always late doing something."

he makes his way to the back silently as the professor continued her lecture. he sat next to jake, and they both began whispering something I couldn't pick up.

a few seconds later, a slow, paper-ripping sound, followed by jay pushing a small peice of ripped paper with his finger across jakes desk to mine.

----------------------------------------------------------------

hi. I'm jay. you're jake's roommate? I'm sorry.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I pause my note-taking and write back:

--------------------------------------------------------------

hi, I'm y/n. and yeah, I am, but he's not that bad. its just a little different. I thought it would be easier. :')

--------------------------------------------------------------

jake stops my note mid-slide and reads it. then he gave me a dirty look, and passed it to jay.

jay gave me a quick, teasing smile and writes down one more thing.

--------------------------------------------------------------

let's talk more. here's my number.

--------------------------------------------------------------

and with that, our paper-convo ended, and we began listening to the last ten minutes of the lecture.
