it was already 2:30, and jake had already shown me the cafeteria, library and lounges.

"that's pretty much it," jake said. "any questions?"

I stood staring at the. huge, long building. we were outside in the middle of the campus. "yeah, wheres the cafeteria again?"

jake laughs and motions his hand to follow him. "ill show you."

. . .

the cafeteria was huge-- there were long tables and circle tables. most of the people were there with books to study. I felt out of place, but jake seemed to notice and put his hand slightly on my shoulder to guide me.

we waited in line for a few minutes.

"get that one!" I heard a whisper-yell near me. I turn to the voice and see two boys--one tucking a mini chip bag into his hoodie pocket and one being the lookout. I turned back around and looked at jake.

"don't pay attention to them." he said plainly. we took our trays and sat at an empty table. still, I couldn't help but think about that chip-stealing duo.

"so jay, tell me about yourself." I said.

"it's jake." he reminded me.

"any interests?"

"dont laugh."

"why would I laugh?"

"physics and astronomy." he said plainly.

"oh, i like space too," i said. "but physics? what's next, math?" i notice his eyes wander around, biting his lip to hold back a smile.

"so y/n, tell me about yourself." he asked, opening his juice carton.

I told him about my interests, favourite planet and why, and he told me about one of his favourite einstien theories, the theory of relativity.

"you're not that bad, y/n." he said with a small smile.

. . .

my classes start tomorrow. I feel nervous, but I know that jake will help me not feel so lost. I sit on the edge of my bed, looking at the ground. Butterflies swarm through my stomach just thinking about walking into a new room full of new people.

I glance at the loveseat across from the bed. jake was laying on his stomach with his legs dangling off the arm, scrolling through his phone

"jake,"

"hm?"

"thanks for helping me."

he turns to face me, smiles softly, and looks back at his phone.

"you got it right this time." he joked. he smiled at his phone again and swiped up.

"hm?" I hum, curious of what's got his attention. he then swiped a few videos down and flashed his light-mode phone towards me. he showed me an instagram reel of a golden retriever catching a ball.

I nodded and smiled at the video. he kinda looks like a golden retriever, now that I see them both.
