Warning: mentioned SA, panic attack

Lyra felt her limbs immediately tense up as she locked gazes with her newest customer. He was a young man her age with hair that had been dyed black and styled with an undercut, tanned skin, and sneaky brown eyes, a sign of the snake he was.

As the man cracked a greedy smile, Lyra felt the Medusa tattoo on her right shoulder seem to tingle. Her mouth went dry, and her hands balled into fists. Why was he here?

"Hey there," the man said with a sneer as he stepped up to the other side of the desk. "Long time, no see."

"Nico . . ." Lyra growled, scowling at her ex boyfriend.

"That's my name, don't wear it out," Nico O'Donnis replied. "Didn't expect to see you here."

"Don't lie to me, you fucking incel," Lyra spat. "Didn't I file a restraining order against you when I dropped outta college?"

"My dad's the police chief, remember?" Nico reminded her. "I get away with everything and anything and you know it. Besides, 's'not like my parents were ever gonna believe the violent druggie psychopath."

"Get out." Lyra ordered through gritted teeth.

"Ah-ah-ah," Nico taunted, wagging his finger back and forth. "Don't let your boss hear you: you're not allowed to refuse customers."

Lyra glanced over her shoulder to make sure the door to the office was closed, then looked back at Nico. Her fingers itched to fish her tazer out of her backpack.

"Scram before I slam your goddamn head into the floor." she hissed.

"C'mon, pretty girl, show me a smile," Nico said crudely. "Don't be such a grump. You should be glad I'm attracted to you, seeing as most of the people here in Glengrave are scared of you."

'Glad?' 'Glad!?'

Lyra felt her blood start to boil. This son of a bitch sure was ballsy.

"Has your tiny, pea-sized fucking brain ever registered the fact that I don't like dudes?" Lyra snapped, glaring daggers at Nico. "That's why I broke up with you, you smelly-ass fuckin' perv, or have ye forgot?"

For the first time, Nico frowned. He didn't seem to like that.

"I got with you 'cause I thought you weren't like the other girls I've met." he said, crossing his arms. "Turns out you're just another whore."

Lyra felt as though a boulder had struck her in the chest as the word 'whore' echoed in her ears. She was now trembling with rage, and she couldn't hold back her anger any longer, or else she would explode. The next thing she knew, Nico was reeling backward as he clutched his bruised cheek, and Lyra had her upper body stretched out over the desk.

"Shit!" Nico spat, his voice strained from pain.

Lyra's eye twitched. Her jaw was clenched so tightly her teeth hurt.

"What's going on!?"

Lyra felt her stomach do a flip as she heard the door behind her open, and Maxine stepped out into the light. When she saw Nico massaging the side of his face, she freaked out.

"Lyra, what the hell!?" she cried. "What'd he do to you!?"

"That's the guy who assaulted me back in college!" Lyra shot back, almost shouting, pointing at Nico with a trembling finger. A sense of fear had now joined the anger coursing through her. Was she going to get fired?

Maxine looked from her customer to her employee before she quickly made a decision. Her widened eyes narrowed.

"Sir, I'm gonna need you to leave before I call the police." she said to Nico firmly, glaring at him as she crossed her arms against her chest.

"Ugh!" Nico groaned loudly, and he stomped out of the store angrily, promising that he'd be back. Lyra raised her middle finger at his back as he left.

After Nico left, Lyra struggled to calm herself, fighting back her nausea as memories of the day she was destroyed flooded back to her. She wrapped her arms around herself. It was as though she was drifting away from reality for a moment.

"Uh, Lyra?"

Lyra felt a jolt of fright as Maxine tried to place a hand on her shoulder, and she slapped her boss's arm away.

"Don't fucking touch me," she snapped, her voice shaking along with the rest of her body.

Maxine looked almost frightened before her face shifted into sympathy.

"I'm sorry, honey," she said. "I get it. It happened to me, too."

"I don't want your fucking pity," Lyra muttered, frustrated. She turned away as she felt her eyes begin to burn. She'd swore to never see Nico again.

"Wanna take a break?" Maxine offered. "Just take as long as you need."

Lyra felt her chest tighten. She nodded hastily, grabbed her backpack, and walked speedily out of the store. Whipping out a cigarette, she struggled to light it as her hands shook, but managed it eventually. Just as she felt as though she was going to throw up, she took a deep whiff of the chemicals, and she let herself fall against the window with her back to it. Smoke flew from her mouth as she exhaled. She let the match fall to the ground and stomped on it, extinguishing the flame.

"Fuck," Lyra heaved, and she sniffled.

Disappointment was burrowing itself into Lyra's chest. If it had been anyone other than Nico, she would have been fired on the spot. How could she have let herself lose her temper like that? She was a tough woman, a badass. Nothing and nobody could shake her. She made sure of that. Or, at least, that was what she told herself.

Lyra took another shaky deep breath, inhaling the cigarette smoke deep into her lungs. Just fifteen more minutes, and then it was back to work. She wasn't going to shut herself away because of a mere flashback or panic attack. She didn't care if it wasn't healthy - she was just that kind of person.

Whatever, Lyra thought, pushing her thoughts of guilt aside. That cunt deserved it.
