Warning: emotional abuse, blood and gore, car crash

~

The drive was silent as Lyra cruised down the highway in her mother's car with Toby in the backseat and the stack of missing posters in the passenger seat. The doctor's office was all the way downtown, so it took a while to get there. Lyra had chosen not to bring any cocaine so as to satisfy her mother, but she had still brought her lighter and a box of cigarettes, which were in her pockets along with her phone.

"What've you g-got there?" Toby asked, finally speaking up.

"Just some posters," Lyra answered. "I'm gonna pass a few out while you're getting checked."

In the rearview mirror, Lyra could see her brother looking rather puzzled.

"Why w-would you need to hand out pos-sters?" they demanded.

"They're missing posters," Lyra explained, "for Liu Woods. You remember him."

Toby groaned with annoyance.

"For fuck's sake, L-Lyra, I th-thought you were smart." he snapped. "We all know his d-d-dead body is rotting aw-way in a ditch somewhere."

Lyra felt as though someone had grabbed ahold of her heart and squeezed it, but not like how one would squeeze someone's hand. Why did Toby have to constantly be so rude?

"We can't give up, Toby," she argued, trying to be gentle. "Liu's my best friend. I can't just leave him out there."

"And why th-the hell not, sis!?" Toby shot back, sounding offended. "Y-you always spent more t-t-time with that grumpy-ass em-mo stoner than you d-did with me! How c-can I be sure that you w-weren't g-grooming him!?"

Lyra's grasp on the steering wheel tightened. How dare he?

"Why would I be attracted to him!?" Lyra shrieked. "I'd never do something nasty like that anyway!"

"I'm your brother! Wh-what did he h-have that I don't!?" Toby continued.

Lyra became overcome with rage. Before she knew it, she was yelling at her sibling and unleashing everything she had been bottling up as she continued driving down the highway.

"He didn't fucking insult me on a constant basis!" Lyra roared, feeling her eyes starting to burn. "He didn't bodyshame me! He didn't compare me to that stupid fucking bitch we have for a sperm donor! He didn't leave me to fend for myself when I was going through shit!"

Toby remained silent, painfully silent. When Lyra looked at them again in the rearview mirror, he didn't look hurt at all. A single tear rolled down the side of her face. She barely noticed the car on the other side of the lane that was starting to swerve out of control.

"You're m-more annoying than Tr-roy," Toby scoffed. "If you wanna be a path-thetic c-cunt, then just leave the h-house already and g-go look for that s-scrawny bastard yourself."

Lyra sniffled and looked away from the rearview mirror at last. She had tried to forget all the times she had run away from home when she was younger. Always, it would be because of her father. But she always came back, knowing that she had to protect Toby and Connie. And whenever she did come back, Toby had always said that he had missed their big sister terribly. But when Lyra was around, Toby constantly berated her. Lyra wanted to leave for good and take Connie with her, but she couldn't. Toby had her on puppet strings.

"Liu's dead, Lyra." Toby said firmly.

Lyra wanted to burst into tears, but she swallowed the rock-hard lump in her throat. Suddenly, the sounds of skidding tires and honking car horns reached her ears, and she looked up just in time to see a car careening head-on towards her with the driver looking completely wasted.

The next thing Lyra knew, the air was filled with the sounds of shattering glass and the crunching of metal. The airbag thrusted out of the center of the steering wheel, smothering her and nearly suffocating her. She heard the back door opening as an explosion rattled her ears. A piercing tidal wave of agony suddenly crashed into her, and she felt as though she had been stabbed with a dozen knives. Something slashed at her nose, taking away a chunk of flesh as blood splattered everywhere. Somewhere in her torso, she felt a rib pop from the airbag.

When Lyra finally realized what had just happened, she found shards of glass lodged in her face and collarbone from the smashed windshield. She let out a horrific scream as the pain registered.

As blood oozed from her many gashes, Lyra looked into the rearview mirror again and found that Toby was nowhere to be seen, having jumped out of their seat. Knowing that her brother was okay, and with her survival instincts kicking in, Lyra pushed away the airbag and began to claw her way out of the car, the sleeve of her tan leather jacket tearing as she did so. She stumbled onto the pavement and started to drag herself across the gravel, but that's when she took notice of another alarming sound: the crackling of fire.

Lyra felt the metallic taste of blood in her mouth. Through the blood in her eyes, she looked to the side and found that the car that had crashed into hers had caught fire and been flipped upside down. The driver was passed out in the front seat, knocked out cold and broken glass stuck in his forehead. He was already being crushed under the car's weight.

Lyra shoved her pain aside as she realized that she had to save the driver before the car completely exploded and he was torn to pieces. Hurting more with every movement, she pulled herself to her feet and limped towards the other car. She tugged the shards of glass from her cuts, the blood flowing more freely now. Everything else became a blur as she pulled the door open with her stinging and bleeding hands. Broken glass formed a pool at her feet as the window completely splintered.

Lyra ignored the scorching and tearing at her upper body and the smoke burning her eyes as she unbuckled the driver from his seatbelt. The pain was torturing her, stabbing every part of her body, but she couldn't give up. She couldn't leave this man to die, even though he had been the one to crash into her first.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!" Lyra let out a scream of pure agony as she wrenched the man from his seat, and his eyes finally fluttered open. His eyes were a hazy blue, and his hair was a muddy brown, with sideburns etched into his cheekbones. He looked exhausted, and there were heavy bags under his eyes. He looked to be in his late twenties, and he wore a tan jacket similar to Lyra's, only it wasn't made of leather.

"What the - ?"

"Suck it the fuck up if you don't wanna die!" Lyra screeched at him through her gritted teeth, blood dripping off of her chin.

Her face contorted with agony, Lyra continued to drag the man away from the car until they were a safe distance away. By now, traffic had come to a screeching halt, and cars had stopped on both sides of the scene as people rushed out to help and call an ambulance. But Lyra barely noticed. She was in too much pain to do so.

Finally, Lyra dropped the man and collapsed on the pavement beside him, completely out of breath. She recieved another jolt of pain as she fell face first onto the rough gravel and her cut nose ached even more.

"Thanks," the man heaved, his eyes drifting open and closed as he struggled to stay conscious. His hair and forehead were matted with blood.

Lyra managed a nod before lifting her head, searching the growing crowd for her brother as people rushed towards her and the man she had saved. When she finally spotted Toby, she realized with horror that they were running away, speeding off down the side of the highway and away from the crash site.

"Toby, come back!" Lyra shouted, her ragged voice breaking with every word.

He didn't turn around.

"TOBY!" Lyra screamed, and she lifted her arm as if to hold it out to him.

He didn't even seem to hear her. They were running away as fast as his legs could carry them, leaving her to suffer . . . just like he always had.

"Please come back . . ."

Lyra could feel the tears and blood trickling down her face as pain smothered her like a thick blanket. Her arm collapsed, and as all her remaining strength was sucked from her body, she could feel someone trying to lift her up from where she lied on the road. Her life flashed before her eyes, and she was plunged into a world of darkness.
