Chapter 9: The Perfect Storm

Avery and Hanna are at Spencer's studying for the SATs. Hanna says, "It's insane. How many words do they expect you to learn in one night?" Avery reads off a card to Spencer and says, "Stringent." Spencer says, "Uh, tough. Inflexible." Hanna says, "It's not like you're gonna actually use 'em." Avery reads the next card and says, "Meretricious." Hanna says, "It's not like you go to college and then you just start speaking a completely different language." Spencer says, "It's about getting into college. Meretricious, um, phony, flashy?" Avery nods and says, "Mm-hmm. Besotted." Spencer says, "Infatuated, enamored, in love with." Avery says, "Speaking of in love. What's going on with you and Alex? Is he back from that tournament?" Spencer says, "Yeah. He's back." Avery says, "And?" Spencer says, "And it's... good. It's so good. I want it to last, but I'm afraid I'm gonna blow it." Avery says, "So, when can we officially call him the boyfriend?" The door opens and in walks Mrs. Hastings. Spencer says, "Hi, mom." Avery says, "Hey, Mrs. Hastings." Mrs. Hastings says, "Hi, girls. Oh, what smells so good?" Spencer says, "Garlic bread. Want some?" Mrs. Hastings says, "I can't. God, I miss food. Eat some butter for me, will you? Oh, why do I have so many messages?" Hanna looks back over at Spencer and says, "Hey, maybe you should ask Alex to--" Spencer cuts of Hanna and whispers, "Stop. Not now." Avery whispers, "Your mom still doesn't know?" Spencer whispers, "Like I said, I want it to last." Mrs. Hastings looks up from her phone and says, "Where's Emily?" Spencer says, "She's probably on her way over."
