003. the night of the comet

THE TOWN was buzzing with anticipation as people crowded around the town square, excited to see the comet. Everyone was holding candles, some lit, most of them unlit though. It had to be a chain reaction. Once your candle got lit, you'd have to light up someone else's.

Walking through the crowd, Theodore ignored the obvious glances being sent his way. He knew there were people who wanted to come up to him and light his candle, but he had no need nor any care to play friendly with them. Spotting a flash of caramel brown hair from the corner of his eyes, Theodore instantly turned his head in that direction, finally finding her look-alike.

Taking a deep breath, Theodore casually walked over to Cassia and questioned, "It's quite beautiful tonight is it not?"

Cassia gasped in shock, almost dropping her candle if it weren't for her quick reflexes. Making eye contact with the person who scared her, she scowled, "What the hell? You scared the crap out of me."

     Smiling unapologetically, he replied, "Apologies."

Cassia rolled her eyes at the terribly unsincere apology. "What do you want?" She asked defensively.

Noticing the way she tensed up, he knew she was expecting him to be rude to her again. Sighing, he stated, "I wanted to apologize for how I've been treating you. My brothers and I don't have the best relationship and the anger and frustration I had with them got transferred to you when I bumped into you. So I apologize for that."

"Oh," Cassia unconsciously muttered in shock as she looked at him in surprise.

Taking her silence to continue, Theodore took out a small box, his hands trembled slightly before he hardened his resolve. "Here," he spoke, handing her the small box. "An apology gift."

Frowning as she looked at the box, Cassia replied, "You don't have to buy my forgiveness. That would be really cheap of me." Furrowing her eyebrows as a thought came to mind, she scowled, "And if that's what you're implying you can kiss your apology goodbye."

"No no," Theodore quickly spoke up, not wanting the girl to leave before accepting the bracelet. "I'm not implying that at all. I had this laying around and thought it would suit you."

"Oh," Cassia whispered, feeling slightly bad about the way she assumed the worst, "I'm sorry."

Waving off her apology, Theodore placed the box in her hand. "Nothing to forgive. Just..." he looked at her oddly for a moment, "Don't take this the wrong way. I'm not interested in you like that."
