"Whoa there, Miss 'I dress up for strangers'. You look fancy."
I twirled in front of my reflection, bordered by the matte black frame I had painted a few years back.
"Why, Liss. You like?" I giggled like a schoolgirl, much to my disgust. Taking in my appearance one last time, I spun away from the mirror with a flourish of the black skater skirt I was wearing, gliding across the hardwood floor in my scuffed black converse.
"I love! Girl, you should dress up more often." My best friend Melissa Hood reached up and adjusted the dark blue button up I had tucked into my skirt, painstakingly rolling up the sleeves in perfect cuffs.
"Your hair looks perfect, babe."
"Why thank you Mikey!" I shrieked, jumping on my closest male friend. He grunted as I landed on his lap, sloppily kissing his cheek in a way I knew he hated.
"Ewww, Nick! That's gross. I hate you."
"You love me! Now, I've gotta go meet Ashton." I hopped up and grabbed my phone, brushing my long brown hair over my shoulder and batting my green eyes at Melissa. "Later girls." I laughed, winking at Michael.
"Bye Nicole!" Melissa called, waving and shooing me out at the same time. "Have fun."
I skipped out the door, smiling, and walked down the sidewalk outside of the apartment building where Michael, Melissa and I lived. There was a slight breeze floating through the warm May air. Smiling to myself, I opened the door to the tiny coffee shop on the street corner.
"Nicole!" a short lady with gray hair smiled at me from behind the counter. it was a crooked smile, but a smile all the same. "How have you been, dear? Come give me a hug!"
I laughed, grabbing my apron off the hook by the front door and giving the woman a hug. "I missed you, Misa!"
"I missed you too, Nick. Now come help me, it's been crazy without you here. How was visiting your parents?"
"It was great, Oregon is beautiful this time of year."
Just as the words left my mouth, the clinking of a bell rung through the air, signaling the entrance of a customer.
"Hi, how may I help yo-" my voice stopped as soon as I met the hazel eyes of a curly haired man. "Sorry, how may I help you?" I regained my composure and smiled.
"Just a black coffee, for here is fine." his accent sent shivers down my spine, although I wasn't cold.
"Coming right up." I spun away from the man after taking the few dollars he handed me.
I slid the mug across the counter, my face flushing as he winked.
"You're quite handsome, if I'm honest."
"No, but thank you, love." the stranger chuckled.
"What's your name?" I asked.
"Ashton." he said, "Ashton Irwin."
"Well, Ashton Irwin." I smirked. "I think you're a babe."
