After clicking send on the end of the shift report I closed out my system, I stood up and stretched. After another 12 hour shift a cold shower and my bed were the only things on my mind. I scanned the production floor seeing a few of the morning shift agents filing in and starting up their computers. I quickly made my way out. As a supervisor,I knew if I stayed too long I would end up with a headset on fixing some issue or another. I walk briskly to my car. I opened the door and got in putting my hand bag on the passenger seat. I relaxed into the leather seat resting my head back on the head rest. I reached up and pulled my ponytail loose. My hair fell down to my shoulders,
"time to go home" I said as I pressed the power button on my car and it roared to life.
"Pray to God mi beat the morning traffic" i said out load. and the prayer worked because the drive home was uneventful and i was glad to be home.
As I pulled into the driveway of my apartment I noticed a car I had never seen before and immediately my paranoia took over.. I parked my car in its usual spot scanning the area before getting out. I picked up my bag and got out of the car, I proceeded to closed the car door and locked it with the key fob immediately putting it into my hand bag. I walked briskly to my apartment door.
"Good morning Amanda" i heard my landlord say in a sing song kinda voice
I turned quickly to see him and a young man approaching me.
My landlord was an older gentleman around 70 years old,but he did not look it. He was tall and light skinned with the kindest grey eyes I ever did see. The first time I met him I remember thinking if he was always this kind and polite. Due to my history with men I tend to be weary of them never letting my guard down around them but Mr Whyte was different.
I turned my attention to the young man walking next to my landlord he had on a button down black shirt and a straight fitting dress pants which was also black. He had on a pair of black leather loafers to complete his outfit. As they got closer i saw that he was also light skined, he had big brown eyes , he had a beard connected to his sideburns and his hair was trimmed low, he looked enchanting with the morning sun hitting his face at an angle illuminating it. I stood there in a trance watching as they came to stop directly in front of me.
Remembering that i did not respond to my landlords greeting i began to speak
"Good morning Mr White".i spoke directly to my landlord.
"How have you been?" he responded with a smile on his face.
I have come to believe that he has a permanent smile. Always so pleasant.
" I am doing well thanks, just coming from work". I said to him as I felt the young man's gaze on me I looked up at him.
"Good to know my dear" Mr Whyte said
"Reason I stopped you this morning is because I want you to meet my grandson. His name is Jason. He will be taking over the property as I am not doing so well health wise." I took my gaze off the guy to look at Mr Whyte, true concern building in me. I realized that he was holding on to a gold cane in front of him and his frame did look thinner than usual. I have not seen him in about a month due to my work schedule and even when I was off on weekends I did not come out much, only to go to the supermarket or the food market.
Was he dying? He looked ok. Well you can look ok and sick. Haven't been around much so I haven't see him for the pass month. my mind raced a million miles an hour he must have seen the look of concern on my face because he spoke
"I will be alright mi child, the old man just needs some rest so i am going to go visit my daughter in florida, and get a check up done there. In the meantime Jason will be here if you need anything." he concluded.
"Damn Jason" ,I said in my head, realizing that I had yet to acknowledge him.
Clearing the lump that had formed in my throat I let out a breath I did not Know I was holding.
"I am so very sorry to hear that you're not feeling well." I said looking at Mr Whyte's dancing grey eyes. A feeling of sadness overtaking me.
"I hope it's nothing serious and a vacation is very much needed you work harder than me." I continued forcing myself to smile. With that he laughed lightly
"it's nice to meet you Jason", I said looking up at him. I just now recognizing how tall and thick he was. he had very broad shoulders and I could see his muscles through his shirt.
"Nice to meet you", he said, stretching out his hand towards me.His voice was heavy and smooth it reminded me of milk chocolate. His simple words washing over me in waves.
Dam him smell sooo good, like cinnamon and oak. I thought
As his long fingers wrapped around my palm in the handshake I felt a surge of electricity shoot up my arm. I pulled back my hand quickly looking up at him in shock his face was unreadable.
"Wah the fuck that"i said to myself looking down on my hand.
"Well my dear I am having a little dinner on Sunday for all my close friends and I would love it if you could make it " Mr Whyte said, drawing me out of my thoughts. I looked over at him and smiled.
"Thank you for the invitation and I will try my best to make it." I said smiling. It was always easy to smile around him. He was that kind of person that made you feel happy just by his presence.
"Ok My dear he side, well i will see you Sunday at 2 then". He added
I nod in acknowledgement.
With that he turned to Jason and said "Say your goodbyes to Mis Amanda and come take me into town we have some business we need to tie up." He turned and walked off .
He was leaning on his cane for support. My heart dropped, realizing that the one friend I had other than my books was about to leave me.
People I love always leave me.
"Well I guess I will be seeing you on Sunday". Jason spoke startling me from my thoughts, his deep voice making me jump a little.
I chuckled nervously looking up at him again
" i guess" i let out a little too fast.
" bye" i said before walking off towards my apartment leaving him standing there
Punching in the code on the keypad to unlock the door I could feel his eyes on the back of my head. The door clicked open and I rushed in slamming it behind me.
A little out of breath i leaned my head against the door
"look like mi finally a mad" i said out loud
I sighed heavily as I felt the cold air in my apartment informing me that I left the ac on.
JPS ago kill me
I set my handbag down on an entrance table as I ensured I bolted all the locks and deadbolts.
I walked through my apartment heading to the bathroom. I stripped all my clothes off depositing them into the dirty clothes hamper, I put my hair into a shower cap and steeped into the shower just standing there letting the water rain down over my body. I washed myself then dried my skin and moisturised, I brushed my teeth as I started to feel drowsy and I knew I would be able to sleep today. I walked out the bathroom turning off the light and closing the door behind me. As I laid my naked body down in my bed. I pulled the comforter over me. I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep the only sleep I have had in days.
Little did I know that my life was about to change forever.
