Chapter 33
Cushane's pov
I was walking along the beach when two men approach me, I felt a knife blade under my right ribcage and one of them say. "Turn around and walk."
"I don't have any money or any valuables on me," I said not wanting to have to beat the shit outta them.
A gun select and I think oh hell no, "tun round and start walk nuh idiot," the one that had spoken before tells me.
I turn around and started walking, I have been on this beach many times before and never seen or heard of anything like this. The sun had set moments ago and I've been enjoying the peaceful quietness while strolling, I was just now heading to go home and now this.
What did they want? My inner voice ask. I only had my Iphone and about four thousand dollars change that I had push into my joggers pocket. If they didn't have a gun it would be easy to beat them up and leave, I will try to take my chance when we reach around the bend.
I glance over my shoulder at the one who had the gun, his hooded face was hidden by the mask covering the bottom half of his face. I was taller than them so that should give me an advantage, I just want to go home and I will not come back to this beach.
We round the corner and in the darkening evening sky I saw two more men and a boat, they were not there a moment ago. " What do you guys want from me?" I ask glancing over my other shoulder.
They were panting from the short walk, whatever their plans were cannot be good. I reel around with much speed and hit hard into the face of the one holding the gun then with lithe movements I twisted his hand and the gun went flying into the water. I grabbed the other's hand that stabbed at me and fling him hard into the other, then made a run for it as I saw the other two men coming.
The sand was hella hard to run in and the beach was now empty, there was no one to call the cops or help me in any way. I was nearing my car when I saw three men dressed like the other's standing by my car, I quickly ran in the adjacent direction which appears to be some fishermen homes. I jumped over the wooden gate hearing shouts some distance behind me, with no idea where I was going I just kept running and hope I didn't meet upon a dead end.
I ran past some people in the yard and jumped the fence into another yard, some dogs began to bark and chase me and I skirted the next fence tripping and falling on an overturned boat. I got up quickly looking around for a place to hide, the dogs barking aggressively tells me the men were hot on my trail and I hurried over the last fence and into the trees.
My leather slippers was filled with sand, it was uncomfortable and I badly wanted to stop and shake it out. A loud bang behind me had me hasting further into the darkened bushes, more shots were fired as my feet begins to sink into soft moldy smelling earth. If this was a swamp I was surely going to be dead one way or another I thought with my heart in my mouth.
I was mainly feeling the way ahead of me to not be pricked in the face or eyes by the thorny bushes ahead of me, more shots were fired and I felt one hit into my shoulder from behind. "Oh God..." I groan in pain.
I hasted away clutching unto the wound as blood oozed from it, I pause and try to see if there was any othet direction I could go in. "Mi nah hear him, listen nuh." I heard a man's voice say.
Realizing they were getting close to me, I bend under a tree and put some distance between us quietly. I took out my kercheif and put it against my shoulder to help stem the bleeding, I crouch low and move to a thicket of trees as my eyes were now adjusted to the darkness. I could not push between the thicket of thorns so I went around it and crouch quietly watching them pass by, they were using their phone lights and one of them say.
"Di fucka get shot, si blood yah! Him caan gone far mek wi hurry up and guh done him."
Some went ahead while two chatted as they followed more slower. "Di deal is fi drown di bloodclaate man simple, now mi affi a walk through fucking macka a scrape up mi skin," one of them said.
As soon as they went some distance away, I turn on my phone light and check if I was leaving blood where I was before making my way back to where the houses were. I didn't want the dogs to start barking so seeing that there was no one about and all the fishermen houses were now locked up, I went in the other direction.
Through the trees I see the boat the men were standing by earlier, I couldn't make out if there were anyone there. I walk under the shelter of the trees until I was a good distance away, I saw a dim light and walk close to it. My vision begins to swim, I shook my head trying to shake it off. A man appears to be fixing fishing nets, I took my phone from my pocket and press the emergency button that contacted my parents and siblings all at once. The man appears to be coming towards me and I try to speak but I couldn't hear myself and I fell on my knees.
Lamais's pov
I sighed tiredly while I waited on Kemar to lock the church gate and then we all walk over to my yard. The dressmaker will be kept very busy and I hope she did the gowns neat with all that we have discussed. Shanty had all the shelves in the shop stocked and I was glad I took the time yesterday to make the roots and oils. With a storm threat issued last night everyone was busy taking the necessary precautions.
After making a list for Shanty to go shopping, just to stock up incase the storm hits and with the rainy weather I like having fresh vegetables along with other creature comforts. Bro. Smith came and check the generator for me, I need to upgrade to solar energy I think as he started it up and the loud annoying sound penetrated my ears.
Shanty came back at five and together we pack out the things, I offered her dinner and while she ate the gate buzzer went. Kemar got up from the living room and went to check, me and Shanty look at each other and I hope it wasn't someone requesting a read this late.
"Ma'am, a man dey a di gate sey him is a fisherman and him need fi talk wid yuh urgently," Kemar says coming inside.
Shanty got up and covered up her plate of food, we both went to the gate to see what the matter was. It was the fisherman I had read, he was looking about behind him nervously and I wonder if someone was chasing him.
"Hello?" Shanty say as we stood looking at him.
"Good evening, ahmn, suh mi did mean to come mek yuh know mi get wet offa di case but a pure stress. Mi have somn important fi tell yuh," he says sounding desperate.
His spirit though troubled was ok and I open the gate and let him in. "What is wrong?" I ask him.
"A'right, mi affi run wey from wey mi did live and guh live a one next seaside. Lastnight one white man come drop dung way round whichpart mi live and when mi check him phone mi si yuh name store ina it. Di man dem wey shot him a search fi him right now, mi hide him unda mi bed and tell mi empress and mi two youth dem sey if nobody come dem fi tell dem sey dem nuh see him. Dis a him I.D wey mi find pon him, mi neva know who else fi guh to," he explains and took a wallet from his pocket and shows me.
"It's Cushane!" I exclaim to Shanty as my heart jolted against my ribcage.
"Yuh say him get shot?" Shanty asks him.
"Yes, mi nuh know wha fi duh mi only gi him some bush medicine wey mi did have. Mi inna enough trouble a'ready but mi heart couldn't gi mi fi just leave him to die. Fi tell yuh e truth not even a bed mi nuh have a sleep pon a just one piece a sponge and some cardboard, a couple piece a tarpaulin mek mi likkle house cause mi affi run lef mi things dem," the fisherman answered then explains to us.
He was deeply stress, while he pour out his heart for me to help Cushane I read him. Such a selfless person I thought as I call Kemar and tell him to call Minister Kirkland and two more brothers to come urgently. I got out a set of towels and some bottles of spring water and tell Kemar to drive out the van.
When they arrive I quickly explain the situation and we set off.
