Another birthday! Yes, I've missed a few. I've been thinking about Kikumo recently, so I'm compiling something special for her here. In two years it'll be her exact birth date, but right now we can still celebrate this adorable psychic shrine maiden.

Kikumo's association with chrysanthemums is special.

Her full name is spelled out in kana as "折り曲げる 燃", meaning "the fire-bending chrysanthemum". Her symbol flower is an orange chrysanthemum too.

But why? Kikumo is inspired by Mario when he obtains a Fire Flower. Fire Flowers look like chrysanthemums, even back in the NES era, so this along with the fire-bending was a given. With her also being a shrine maiden, another inspiration is Rei Hino from Sailor Moon, who is also a fire-bending psychic shrine maiden.

Literal Fever Dream is the equivalent arc of that 1993 Mario film, right? So why isn't it about Nozomi and Niitsu?

I always intended for the Luigi to Niitsu's Mario to be her daughter. The alternative cyberpunk dystopia that the film takes place in made me decide to set it in the future, but Mario's actor (Bob Hoskins) being considerably older than Luigi's (John Leguizamo) was what mainly pushed me to set it up this way. If you didn't know the story, you'd probably think Mario was rewritten as his father or an uncle in the film.

Also, Luigi debuted in the games in 1983, and the Fire Flower was introduced in '85. Although unintended, this gap is the same as Mario's and Luigi's first appearances. Funny coincidence, right? I didn't even realize that when creating Kikumo and putting her in this role.
