I've just finished up dinner when James walks inside with a paper bag in hand. I hurry to the door and take the bag from him, dragging him to the couch.
Dinner is a roast, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, and a salad. For dessert it's my special apple pie with ice cream. It's bigger than usual as a little birthday surprise. I also had Lola pick up a few gifts that I picked out for him.
"What smells so good?"
"Dinner. Stay right here while I take this. The kitchen and dining room are off limits," I say as I spin around and walk to the bathroom.
I take the pill, relief flowing through me knowing that I don't want get pregnant from a stupid accident when being caught up in the moment. Never will I ever forget a condom again.
I make it back to the living room, James watching me the whole time. I smile, "thank you."
He smiles back, "of course. I would do anything for you." I blush heading back into the kitchen to get the food to the dining room. Once everything is set up I call him in.
"Wow. What's the special occasion," James asks, astonished at the amount of food on the table.
I come up behind him and wrap my arms around him, "your birthday." He spins around in my arms, trying to look at me.
"Why? My birthday isn't for another week?"
"My car gets out of the shop in 2 days," I frown. "I'm not going to be here for your birthday." Tears well in my eyes but I blink them back. No crying during a celebration.
He kisses my hair, "okay," he whispers, not too happy about the impending date either.
I look up at him, putting on my best smile, "let's eat."
We pile food onto our plates and dig in. "Mmmm, it's always better than the last time," he groans with his mouth full of food, bringing an actual smile to my face.
"You want to know who I saw at the drugstore," James asks with a smirk.
I quirk and eyebrow, "who?"
"My grandma." I nearly choke on my food. When I finally swallow my food I laugh so hard I almost pee my pants. James joins in, laughing almost as hard as me.
"Darby?! What did you do?" I stop laughing and gasp, "oh my god! Did she see you with the Plan B?!" All of the blood drains from my face, terrified about tomorrow's Sunday dinner.
