Bucky's POV

Today is the day that I must leave it all behind to defend the country, against the upcoming war. I am laying down in bed next to the beautiful woman I have the privilege of calling my girlfriend, admiring everything about her. I realise once again that I will not be able to see her until I come back, which for all I know I might not. Her wavy brown hair falls across her face as she stirs in her sleep, cuddling closer to my side. I look across from me, looking at the watch on my bedside table. The time read 4:37 am, I have to be ready by 5:15 am so that I don't miss the train. 30-ish minutes is plenty of time, I think to myself. I look back down at her, meeting her now-open eyes. The ones that I have slowly fallen in love with over the time that I have known her. Love. That is going to make it so much harder to leave.

"Hey baby" I whisper quietly, not wanting to startle her.

"Hey," I hear her mumble in response. I wrap my arms around her waist, pulling her in closer, "when do you have to leave?"

"30 minutes," I said quietly. She looked up at me and I could see the tears brimming her eyes, she smiles through the pain, "okay we should probably get ready then...."

"Yeah," I spoke in response, but no one moved. I look over at my new army uniform, my mind suddenly going blank. She follows my eyes to see what I was intensely staring at.

"As much as I hate that you have to leave, I really want to see you in that uniform," she chuckled, blinking her tears away. I rolled out of bed, giving her a sweet kiss, and then leave to try on my outfit.

When I walk into the closet, I remember that I bought a necklace for her a while back, it had both of our initials on it so I thought it would be a perfect present. I grab the small blue box to give to her and walk back out to the bedroom.

(the necklace

When I arrive back, I look over to find that she has fallen asleep, cute. I have always been a morning person, never being able to sleep in, whilst that is Ash's favourite thing. I walk up to her brushing some of her hair behind her ear, as it had fallen across her face. When I did this, it caused her to wake up again. She let out a small gasp at the sight in front of her. "You look so hot," She announced with a smile, making a blush spread across my entire face in an instant. "You know, Sergeant James Barnes really suits you" she says with a smile. I look away trying to hide the obvious blush on my face.

"I have a present for you" I say with a smile, pulling the box out from behind my back and handing it to her.

"You didn't have to", she said with a frown, but that quickly disappeared when she opened the box. Her face was showing an unreadable expression making my heart sink, what if she doesn't like it. "It's beautiful," she pauses for a second, admiring the necklace with a smile on her face. Oh, thank God.

"I thought you didn't like it for a second and I was freaking out," I said with a smile. She jumped into my arms and asked me to put it on for her.

I look over my shoulder, seeing the watch from earlier. The time was now 5:10 am, and my smile began to vanish, and so did hers. "It's time, isn't it?" she asks.

"Yeah," I said quietly, "come here." I motioned her toward me pulling her in for a tight hug. Memories of the past few years rush through my head, from meeting her to Coney Island last night. Best years of my life. I pull away from her and give her another kiss, but this time on her lips. It was more than just a sweet peck though; it was the last time I will be able to kiss her for a long time. So, I made sure it was the most passionate kiss we'd ever had. I pulled away once again, knowing one thing for certain. I was going to miss that for sure.

"I am going to miss you so much, you have no idea" I reassured her, but then a thought came to my mind. "Promise me that if I don't come back," I paused thinking about what I was about to do, "you will move on, find another person that truly loves you, okay?"

"I- I can't Buck" her voice cracks, tears now streaming down her beautiful naturally blushed cheeks.

"Yes, you can, because that's what you deserve, you deserve to be loved again, okay-," salty tears now falling down my face, "just promise me you will at least try to find someone else".

After a few seconds of silence, she finally agreed, and a wave of relief washed over me. I looked over at the watch, one last time, seeing that it was now 5:15 am. I gather all my things and look back at her, giving her one last hug and kiss. Leaving has to be one of the hardest things I have ever done. Now I understand why all the enlisting posters said 'not for the faint-hearted. I release her from my arms for a final time, walking out the door to go to the train. I would be lying if I said I wasn't crying at that exact moment and I'm sure she was too.
