"Fair enough excuse, I guess," I wink before picking up a shovel and looking over the seeds and starter plants she had picked out. "Let me help out."
"Are you sure you want to?"
"Yes, I am! Why wouldn't I be?"
" I don't kno- OH!" A sudden gasp left her mouth when she had, I'm guessing, spotted something behind me.
Not thinking much of it, before I turned around myself. It took me a second to see what she had noticed, but when I saw it...
My heart stopped.
Things started to change when I moved to Cavebourne but before that moment, the changes were subtle and only were talked about for a couple of minutes until the subject was put on something else. This, though... THIS was not subtle.
My sister and I stood here in shock. How was it possible, I thought at the time. I questioned if I took too much of my anti-depressants the night prior. My breath started to quicken while I started walking towards it, my sister followed very close behind me. I left a couple of feet between it and us, but we were just close enough for us to understand exactly what was going on.
The silver bell simply floated in the air like a star stayed in place so far away. Like gravity didn't exist. Other than a small jingling sound coming from it, the bell was completely still. Claire whispered about something I didn't quite make out, until the bell just... dropped. A small gasp came from me, before I backed up a couple more feet. Cavebourne was a strange town yes, but this peaked all of everything you'd call strange about that place. That was some kind of horror movie shit. I had thought it was some mindless prank, but the more I had thought about it there was nothing that could pull off something like that.
Thoughts were racing in my mind, making it to where I didn't even notice Claire advancing closer to the bell.
"Holy gosh..." The words were somewhat mumbled for me to hear, while she gently reached out and poked the small piece of metal. "Did... Did that just happen?"
"Oh, did an inanimate object just levitate off the ground just now? Did an INANIMATE object JUST start floating... IN MID FUCKING AIR?!" The outburst was sudden, but it was word vomit out of the fact I started hyperventilating.
"Kei, chill out!!" The words came somewhat harshly from my sister's mouth.
"Chill out?! How the hell do I chill out? We just- We just saw-"
"I know what we just saw! But panicking and making a scene about it ain't going to help anything!"
Claire was right, but...
How is she so calm about what just happened? How is she not freaking out? Why is she not running into the house to get mother? Does she know something?
My eyes didn't move away from my little sister, questions filled my brain along with an unsettling feeling of confusion. There I was, the older brother freaking out while my younger sister sat on the ground looking and studying the bell that I didn't notice she had picked up and was then handling it in her hands.
"It's so warm..." She said, under her breath some. Claire stood up, holding the bell like it was an injured animal. "Someone had to be holding it or something, because it wouldn't be this warm."
"Well.." I started when I was calmer, "whoever had it or wherever it's been, it's not safe, Claire. Let's put it down-"
"Put it down?!" She scoffed, putting the bell behind her back slightly. "Hell no! How could I just put it back? After these few years of not being able to... Being able to..." Tears formed in the corner of her eyes.
