"Oh yeah," I said, "Hunding mentioned something about a new hallmate?"
"Did he say that?" Halfborn asked.
"Ugh," I hope we're not stuck with another idiot," Mallory looked like she was trying to glare at both Halfborn and me at the same time.
We rounded the corner and I saw her standing at the end of the hall chatting with TJ, her back facing us. I breathed a sigh of relief; if she got along well with him she'd definitely not be too bad, or at least not tell me that I was an idiot every five seconds.
TJ saw us coming and said something to her. She turned around and for a second my breath caught in my throat.
She was cute. Like, cute cute. (Yes, I'm very good at describing people) She made me think of a character in an action anime; (don't judge; the TV's at the homeless center had some pretty good anime shows) with petite features but a strong build. Dark navy hair hung down her back in a loose braid, the pieces falling around her face light blue at the ends. She had on a light grey T-shirt, jeans, and a bubblegum pink jacket. Her eyes, which were a light teal-blue and looked like they had flecks of gold in them, sparkled when the light hit them.
She looked like the kind of girl who would've given me money back when I was homeless, wished me good luck, and asked if there was anything else she could do.Definitely not the idiot calling type.
But as she walked closer I started to notice things that weren't quite right; her smiling face had light frown lines on it, and her fingers twitched as if they were used to holding a weapon. Her sparkling eyes seemed lost, as if she was looking for something far away but couldn't quite find it. More than anything she gave me the impression of a child lost at a grocery store, why did my parents leave me here? I wish they would come back.
"You're late," TJ chided us, "we've been waiting for twenty minutes!"
"Not our fault," Mallory grumbled, "we were trying to keep Magnus alive. He's terrible at chess!"
"He really is, Halfborn agreed, "and we were up against floor 49. They've got a mean chess game."
Out of sheer boredom I'd gone to play Viking chess (to the death, of course) with my hall-mates and now I could say with 100% certainty that I never wanted to go near a chessboard ever again.
The new girl stepped forward, snapping me back into the present.
"I'm Kia Nakaji," she said with a warm smile, "it's great to meet all of you."
"Likewise," Halfborn grunted. Mallory offered a "hey," seeming a little confused by Kiea's unvikinglike behavior. I opened my mouth to say hi, only to find my tongue had turned to lead. Seriously, since when did I fanboy over every girl I saw?
Not every girl, my brain reminded me, just this one.
Right. Thanks brain.
Being in her path felt like standing in direct sunlight. No, that wasn't it, she-
"Why are you glowing?" I blurted.
She glanced at TJ like is this how Vikings say hello? He stared at me.
"Magnus, what are you talking about?"
Kia looked down at her hands which were, in fact, emitting a small amount of light. Not enough to light up the room but enough for me to see it. I'm perceptive like that. She let out a small tired laugh, "to be honest, this isn't the weirdest thing to happen to me today. Actually, I-" The dinner horn sounded throughout the hotel and Kia jumped so high I was afraid she might hit her head on the ceiling.
"What was that?" She yelped.
"Dinner!" TJ said, patting her on the back and rushing off in the opposite direction.
"Hope you, uh, did good," Mallory mumbled, following him. She still looked disgruntled from losing the chess match, plus she still had a pawn in her arm (she wouldn't let me heal it out, something about warriors honor and technical chess terms)
"Great to meet you Key of, uh, Knock-a-Knee," Halfborn said, patting her on the shoulder. She smiled like she didn't have the heart to tell him that was totally not her name. "I can't wait to see what your great deed was!" Her smile disappeared. He grinned before running after our Hall-mates who had already disappeared around the corner.
I thought I heard her mutter, "yeah, me too."
