The room was quiet. Helgi glanced around before realizing he had to stand back up.

"We shall, ahem, call the Vala to read your fate," he said, his voice not projecting quite as much as he had probably wanted.

"Sam," I whispered, leaning over, "the Norns are probably going to come read her fate, right?"

She nodded, "this is big. Like, way bigger than you were."

I opened my mouth to complain, but I noticed how tense her posture was and how tight her hands were gripping her sword, like she was ready to chop off the head of whoever talked to her again. In this case, that 'whoever' happened to be me so I decided to keep quiet. I wondered if that Valkyrie had been a friend of hers, or if just seeing someone in her sisterhood get vaporized was bad enough.

There was a splash at the base of the waterfall and every warrior in the room leaned forward, eyes wide, breath bated. I wasn't particularly looking forward to seeing my three floating besties again, but I couldn't help but join them. The spray cleared, which wasn't exactly how it had happened to me, and at the bottom of the pond we could all see... a branch.

There was noise above and we looked to see a beaver gnawing at a similar sized branch until it too tumbled down the central tree into the pond with a floom. I was pretty sure beavers weren't native to trees, but neither were goats or deer so I decided he was special. More importantly, no floaty ghost ladies had appeared. No creepy voices had floated around, pronouncing her the harbinger of the maple leaf.

There were no Norns.
