I had become pretty well known around the hotel, though I wasn't sure I liked that. Someone patted me on the back as I walked by. A couple of kids jumped under tables, but that could've been because of Eric The Changer, or That Eric as most of us called him, who had decided on this particular night that he was an axe juggler. I decided it was the second option.
A couple of Valkyries shot me glares as they flew by, though I deserved that. I thought back to Gunnilla; she'd seemed like a jerk at first, but Kia's Valkyrie really took the cake.
I glanced over to the front table where they seemed to be locked in a deep argument. I wished I could read lips like Hearth but I guessed it was something like,
Why are you such a jerk?
I'm not a jerk!
Fine, then, why did you bring me here?
I can't tell you.
Why not?
Because I'm a jerk!
I realized I'd reached our table when I almost tripped over TJ's rifle, which he had parked conveniently in the middle of the floor. Tonight we were seated near the front, close enough that I could see the newcomers table.
"Magnus, good," Halfborn said as I sat down, grabbing my falafel meat and goat's mead. "I was afraid you'd gotten lost."
I shook my head in the direction of the front table, my mouth too full of food to say anything.
"Showing her around Valhalla! Who said chivalry was dead?" TJ wiggled his eyebrows at me. Being from the Civil War, TJ was a strong believer in chivalry.
Mallory waved her butter knife at me threateningly. "You'd better not be causing any trouble for my new Shield-Sister. She's the first newcomer in a hundred years who's not a complete idiot."
I noticed she'd included me in the idiots, though I couldn't argue with that. Although, she called people she liked idiots. I wasn't sure how to feel about that. I felt like my thoughts were going too fast; even though my arm had stopped tingling so much I still felt strangely awake, much more than than the mead usually made me.
After Sam finished her serving duties she came to sit at our table, grabbing herself some goat mead. She looked on edge. After she'd downed her drink (which wasn't long, Sam could drink like a starved enherji) she glanced over at Kia.
"That new girl is in your hall, right?" she asked.
"Yeah, Kia. She's great."
Sam looked at me strangely.
"What? Is she not?"
She shook her head and continued, "I really thought there'd be more people here, but I guess Canada is pretty empty."
"Canada? Where'd that come from?"
"Dark fire giants," Halfborn commented. Half a chicken bone stuck out of his mouth. I wondered where he'd gotten that; his piece of Saehrimnir, as far as I could tell, was not a chicken.
Sam nodded, "This morning a couple of dark fire Jotuns invaded Midgard around Hudson, Quebec."
"Canada," I murmured, "that explains why she's so nice."
Sam was staring at me weirdly again, like I'd just said I hated falafel and her perception of me had flipped inside out.
"What!?" I demanded.
"You- nothing. Anyway, I don't think any other mortals were killed, and some enherji were able to shut it down pretty quick, but still. Poor girl."
I thought back to what Kiea had said about the last moments she remembered: fire and death. That described Norse fire creatures pretty well. And dark fire Jotuns? I didn't know what those were but they sounded terrifying.
Oh Right, I should probably tell them about her memory issues; that's going to be important.
I opened my mouth to say something, but before I could Helgi pushed his chair back with a screech and raised his cup.
Interrupted again; it was like Odin himself didn't want us to tell anyone about this. No, I thought, if he wanted that he would've already given me a two hour long slideshow on why no one should hear about it.
"Valkyries, Einherji, Thanes," Helgi's voice echoed around the room. His hair, as always, looked like it had been cut by a lawnmower, though it was slightly singed at the edges. I guessed his barber had upgraded him to lawn mower a flambé tonight.
"We only have one new member of Valhalla who died when rogue fire Jotuns invaded Midgard. We will watch the Valkyrie Vision, now in 4K," he paused for dramatic effect. A few kids went "oooooh." "and see for ourselves. Kia Nakaji, rise and impress us with your heroism!"
