Tasmanian devils are mammals and are carnivorous. The scientific name for the Tasmanian devils is Sarcophilus harrisii. Sarcophilus tells what group of animals the Tasmanian devil belongs to and harrisii is the species name for Tasmanian devils. One thing that describes a Tasmanian devil is that it is fierce. They fight for mates and food. These Tasmanian devils only live on an island called Tasmania.

Tasmanian devils have a disease that kills them. The disease is called Devil facial tumor disease also called for short DFTD. This disease is cancer that only affects Tasmanian devils. DFTD causes the appearance on the Tasmanian devil's face or inside the mouth to have tumors. These tumors can become quite large and as a result, they die. The disease spreads by transferring living cancer cells into another Tasmanian devil when they bite each other.

The average lifespan for a Tasmanian devil is three to four years. Most never live past five years. The max years that a Tasmanian devil can live is eight years. They are considered mature at the age of two years old. The female Tasmanian devil weighs about thirteen pounds and a male weighs eighteen pounds. Babies could be called "imps", "pups", or "joeys". Tasmanian devil females are only pregnant for three weeks before having young. Tasmanian devil females can have about twenty to thirty babies in a litter. Some litters can have as many as forty babies and mothers give birth when they are two-years-old.

Tasmanian devils are an endangered species and this means that they are in danger of dying out for good. The population of Tasmanian devils in the year 2018 is estimated to have 25,000 to 10,000 left in the wild. The cause of this is DFTD. Tasmanian devils are a keystone species to its ecosystem which means Tasmanian devils are one of the most important creatures in their environment. If Tasmanian devils die out Tasmania's ecosystem would fall in ruins because the food web would collapse. All creatures are important to their food web but, keystone species are more important to the ecosystem.

Tasmania's food web.

Tasmanian devils are scavengers so they only eat the remains of dead animals. Tasmanian devils fight each other for food. The strongest eat like kings and younger or weaker ones eat the scraps. The ears of Tasmanian devils change color to a bright red when they fight or they are angry. Young Tasmanian devils can climb trees, but it gets harder for them when they get older. They do the exact same job as vultures. Their job is to clean up the environment of bones and dead animals.
