Chapter 22

I broke away from Alex and ran towards the door, and he followed me. However, he managed to catch up with me already at the entrance to the staircase.

"Wait. Don't go there! "He shouted, grabbing my arm.

"Mat is there!" I shouted back, trying to break free.

"Then I will go. Stay here. '' He ran down the stairs, not yet disguised from his green uniform, and I followed him.

"Alex, don't! They will kill you! You're wearing your uniform! They're killing German soldiers! "I yelled after him "Alex!" I sat down on the stairs without any hope and hid my face in my hands. I don't know who I was more scared about: Mateusz or Alex. Grandma looked out at the staircase.

"Come home. Quick! "She urged, and I reluctantly entered the apartment.

"Mateusz's still gone?" I asked, and she slowly nodded.

"I hope he keeps his distance from what is happening here. "Tears dripped down her wrinkled face. "Yesterday a letter from this parents came. They invite him to join them in England. What do I tell them if he doesn't come back or he gets caught?" She started crying.

"He's gonna be fine, Grandma" I tried to calm her down. " He's a smart boy. He'll be home when it calms down outside".

"You're probably right." She finally agreed with me, and at the same moment one of the stray missiles hit our kitchen window. We both threw ourselves screaming on the ground while the glass fell on the floor. I crawled into the living room, which was on the opposite side of the kitchen, so it was a relatively safe room. Then another window got hit. This time the glass shattered in my bedroom as it was located next to the kitchen and had a window overlooking the street. I didn't have time to despair over the broken window  because it was more important now to hide in a safe place and not be hit by a bullet or broken window pane. Grandma also moved into the living room. As soon as we were both there, we heard that the front door opened, someone rolled into the apartment and it slammed shut. We both looked at each other and I stuck my head out of the living room. A panting Mateusz was sitting on the floor by the door, and a German was barely gasping right next to him. I thought I was going to cry with happiness. I ran up to them and hugged them both ...
