Maia was currently sitting at her black dressing table with maids braiding her hair into one of her favourite hairstyles. Today was the day, the day she had been dreading ever since she and her parents had that conversation.
Today was the day she would meet her fate and her future husband.
Many thoughts ran through her mind causing her anxiety to rise, She wondered if he would be a good husband, although it was well known by the whole realm that he wasn't exactly the marriage type, she still couldn't help but wonder how he would treat her. She hoped he wasn't as bad as people made him out to be, I mean half of these people have never even had a conversation with him, so how would they know his true self? What she did know however is that people judge, gossip, and spread rumours simply because they can.
So, she decided she would judge him for herself. No matter the outcome, she wouldn't let herself be treated as any less than his equal.
''We are done Lady Michaelson'' she was brought out of here thoughts at the sound her maids voice. She tried her best to put on a smile.
''Thank you, you may leave''
Both maids bow and make there exit, leaving Maia alone. She takes in a deep breath and looks at herself in the mirror.
She was wearing a beautiful white jacket decorated with her family's symbols, and black leather pants more fit for the journey she was about to go on. Maia's father wanted her to travel by carriage as it was the more distinguished way of travel, but Maia refused. There was no way she was leaving her dragon here, she could barely go a day without riding her and told her father that there was absolutely no chance she would be doing so.
Ok, lets do this.
Lifting herself from her chair and beginning her way out her chambers, she felt sadness and frustration fester in her chest, she hated that she had to leave her family and home simply because one man said she must, it sounded ridiculous in her mind.
Maia walked through the empty halls as slow as possible, trying her best to avoid the inevitable moment of saying goodbye to her family.
She reached the doors and simply stood there for a few moments before finally lifting her hand to grab onto the handle, the coolness of the metal snapping her out of her daze.
Maia put a smile on her face. She was the oldest, it was her job to take care of her siblings, and right now the best way to help them is to let her know she is ok, even if she wasn't.
Opening the double doors, she was faced with her whole family, seeing all their faces only made it harder to keep the fake smile on her face. Walking up to her parents, she immediately engulfed her mom in a hug, holding her close while she can. Her mom slowly stroked her hair with her hand, something she did as a habit when comforting one of her children.
Her mother pulled away and looked into her eyes ''You are strong Maia, don't let anyone take that away from you''
Maia nodded while trying her hardest to blink the tears away ''I won't, I promise.'' Her mother gave her a tight lipped smile, clearly trying her best not to cry.
Maia pulled away, unable to look at her mother without crying for any longer. Her eyes met the warm brown ones of her father. Putting both his hands on her shoulders, he looked into her eyes for a few seconds before pulling her into a tight hug. '' I'm so proud of you Maia, you have grown into a strong woman just like your mother.''
Maia rests her chin on his shoulder and shuts her eyes, savouring the moment. ''I love you father.''
Her father pulls away and looks at her with a look that could only be described as pride, all over his face. ''I love you dearly Maia, you are my pride and joy''
Maia smiles and turns to her siblings, and as soon as she fully faces them they all engulf her in a tight group hug.
Adam looks up at her with tears in his eyes ''Do you have to go sister?'' he says in a small voice, making Maia's heart shatter.
''Unfortunately, I do, but don't worry I will come and visit you whenever I can'' Her eyes meet her only other brother, Sebastian who was only a few years younger than her. ''You will have to look after them now that I'm leaving.''
Sebastian puts a small smile on his face ''Don't worry, you were the hardest child to take care of, we'll be fine'' he says clearly Trying to lighten the mood.
With small roll of her eyes, she moves on to her last and youngest sibling. Maia bends down and rests on her knees ''I will miss you so much Angie, I love you'' Angie wraps her small arms around Maia's neck ''I will miss you too sister, be safe out there, and try not to make anyone cry'' Maia lets out a small laugh and nods her head. ''No promises''
Maia lifts from her spot on the floor and does a once over of her family.
'' Well, I best be off then'' She tries her best to not to let her sadness show. They all look at her with encouraging looks, looks that give her her motivation to keep moving.
She turns around and exits through the large doors, using every ounce of self control to stop herself from turning around and running back.
She made her way to the dragon pit. Once she had made her way there, she immediately mounted her white dragon. Kari, was truly beautiful, she was a completely white dragon with a peach colour at the interior of her wings. Anyone who looked at her would often describe her as the most magnificent creature they had ever seen.
Her skin was often compared to that of snow, which is where the origin of her name began.
Kari means 'Covered in snow' which is perfect to describe her.
Maia secured herself on her saddle and took off. She kept her head faced forward and tried her best to not think about the family she was leaving behind.
