Anya
Anya was in the middle of eating her breakfast, which was hefty and decent even for hospital standards, when she heard a shy knock on the door. She wiped her mouth with a napkin and invited the person inside.
"Dominic!" She said, worrying that her face revealed just how much she was excited to see him. Something about his own smile told her that he figured it out nonetheless, but she put it in the back of her mind for the moment, as h e went straight to the bed and kissed her forehead. She laughed, then she took a good look at him, from his carefully combed hair, to the wrinkled suit and pants.
"That is the same suit you had on yesterday! Did you even go home last night?"
"Not really," he sighed and pulled the round, rolling chair close to her, so that their faces were inches away from one another. It was very hard and uncomfortable, but if he had spent almost five hours sitting on it last time, he can suffer through it now.
"Why?"
He gave her a long, intense look.
"Kayla and I had a serious fight over the phone last night, and home was the last place that I wanted to sleep at.
"So where did you go, then?"
"My friend Mike has a spare bedroom in his apartment. I went there, and I will probably stay until the divorce is finalized.
"Oh yeah, you mentioned the divorce. I'm sorry to hear that."
"I don't understand."
"Isn't there any way to work the things out?"
"No. I don't want to," he said. She could see that the divorce topic made him upset, but she couldn't resist asking him more questions.
"Why not?"
"I don't want to work on that marriage because it was supposed to be done many years ago, and I would still have to have loving feelings for Kayla, which I don't. This marriage is so fake that it doesn't even deserve to be called that." Just when Anya began thinking the impossible, like offering him her bed, a doctor came in and told her that she can leave the hospital. Dominic stood up.
„Do you need help, Anya?"
„No, I'm quite all right, thank you. Alice brought me some clothes that she had so...If you'd just turn around so I can undress..."
„Oh, yes, absolutely." He almost blushed while he turned around and waited for her to take her hospital gown off, and put on Alice's clothes. He inspected the crack on the wall while he waited.
„I'm ready." She said and he turned around. She was still sitting on the bed, but now she was fully dressed. She wrapped her shoulders in a large shawl.
„Can I at least take your bag?"
She nodded and smiled.
„Yes, you can. And if it's not too much to ask..."
"Yes?" He tensed.
"Can you drop me off home?"
Dominic's face lit up like a Christmas tree and she laughed. He looked so gorgeous to her, with just a hint of childish playfulness, that she wanted to hug him. His body was appealing and she wished she could hold on to him and never let him go.
"I'll need directions. Do you want me to take your bag?"
"No, thank you. I'll do it myself." She picked up a large bag that Alice brought when she visited her. It contained clean pajamas, face cream, a toothbrush and a book. All of these, of course, belonged to Alice because Anya didn't want to tell her where she lived. Since they were both about the same size, Alice's pajama fit her almost perfectly. Everything was better than a hospital gown.
