STEVIE AND EVIE
"Evie? Evie! Evie, wake up!" I hear a frantic voice call.
I feel myself being pulled from underneath my blankets when something sharp pokes my thigh.
"Stop." I groan. "Leave me alone." I swat the person holding me as I realize I am being dragged. Am I hungover?
"Evie, it's me Steven!"
"Stevie?" I ask, opening my eyes. My eyes clear, and I am met with my beautiful, brown haired, boyfriend Stevie. My heart swells and, wrapping my hands around his neck, I kiss him with a smile and then rub our noses together. "Good morning."
"Evie, what happened?" He asks me.
"What?" I reply, confused. Steven gestures behind me with his head. I look behind me and swear. My desk is charred and what is left of my computer is sparking. My chair is turned over.
"I found you underneath that. What happened?"Stevie asks frantically. I turn towards Stevie, and he caresses my face. I look away from his eyes as I think back to last night, my dark, ruffled hair covering my face.
"My computer shut down. There was a radio. It was duct taped. I think it could've been a prank, but it may be more sinister, like, hackers. Then, my the monitor exploded." I leave his arms and stagger to the window.
"This window was open, so I closed it. I was hearing my name being called from it."
"When I came in, there seemed to be no sign of a break in." Stevie told. I hear the question in his voice. "How late did you stay here? Before you passed out, I mean."
"11pm or so." I reply. "I'm going to look at the surveillance." I walk away and down into an office, suddenly noticing a pounding headache. I hear Stevie following me. I sat down in the black, plush wheeled chair, I turned on the computer, and waited.
"Evie, this could be seriously dangerous. It seems like someone was trying to kill you."
"Who would kill me?" I ask distracted, typing in my username and password.
"A friend of one of the many people you bring to justice. You could have died."
"It was just a small explosion." I brush the subject off, not wanting to think to strongly on the matter. That I could have died.
"Either way, someone is sending you a message."
"Yes," I fum, "But of what content?" I click on the surveillance app.
There is nothing going on from the time I was attacked. There is nothing for five minutes. "Here I am leaving my desk to go down the hall, then it goes fuzzy." I report. "Let me check earlier.
"It seems that they've done a cliche camera cover."
"Ya, they made everything look alright by using old footage." I say, staring at the screen.
We walk back to where the bomb exploded. I pick up the broken computers and put what could fit into the trash bin. I look at the rubble. I look really hard to the point where my boyfriend asks, "what's wrong?"
"There is no sign of a bomb. Or anything."
He scrunches his eyebrows and looks down in serious thought. "Do you think it was something from the inside of your computer, like a website or an app?"
I suck in a breath. "I-I don't know..." And, I hate that feeling. Stevie always could rid of my cold professional side. The side were I can lie about my emotions. "It must be... I should report this and... call my boss."
Stevie stares at me for a moment longer before saying, "come, let's go to my place. You need a shower and some food, I'll make waffles." I walk up to him, and he places his arm on my shoulders. We were leaving the now brightened room when he says, "I knew work was killing ya, but I didn't think you were serious."
"You seriously need to take me more seriously." I reply with a smile.
Stevie can always make me smile.
