Dark Night - Chapter Two

"No, you don't get it, Kemal. I am not saying I can't be with you tonight or next week," the teacher bit back tears, watching as surprise and disappointment mixed together in his eyes as the man she adored registered the words that condemned whatever chance of a future they might have had. "What I am really saying is that it can never happen."

Kemal blinked repeatedly, still unable to process what exactly was happening.

"I... I don't get it," the coach narrowed his eyes, studying Burcu intently, "I thought you wanted this as much as I do," he confessed, unsure of how to feel about the situation.

Burcu opened her mouth to answer but hesitated several times, incapable of coming up with an explanation. Kemal noticed how uneasy she seemed, and his mind raced again.

Until now, Burcu's agitation had been perfectly clear to him, but Kemal guessed she felt that way out of inexperience and anxiety. This was the first time he saw Burcu looking genuinely uncomfortable. Knowing that he was the one causing that reaction caught him completely off guard.

A heavy silence fell upon them, making the atmosphere tenser. As seconds went by without a word being said, Kemal slowly lost hope of understanding the situation.

Although he felt devastated, the coach forced himself to look the woman in front of him in the eyes before speaking again.

"I suppose that means you want me to leave," he took a step back, giving her space as he grabbed his forgotten coat hung on the back of the sofa.

He had already put on the first sleeve when he registered the soft sound of Burcu's voice.

"It's not what I want at all. Please, don't go."

Kemal turned toward the teacher and saw her effort not to give in to the tears accumulating in her eyes. There was a devastating shadow of sadness on that beautiful face, and once again, the coach found himself unable to understand what was happening.

First, Burcu would tell him that she didn't want to be with him, but then she would ask him to stay. Just minutes ago, she had melted in his arms and kissed him with complete abandon, yet shortly after, she already seemed mortified just to be in his presence.

"I am trying really hard to understand you right now, but I am going to need a little more from you," he said gently, giving up on the coat and putting it back on the couch.

Kemal took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, unconsciously hoping to comfort Burcu without knowing why he felt the urge to do that.

"I..."

He noticed that she was trying hard to explain herself but still struggled, unable to use her words. Kemal could see a mix of disappointment and confusion adding more sorrow to her face. He probably should have been frustrated by Burcu's inability to communicate with him, but he was strangely moved by her mysterious predicament.

Relying entirely on instinct, Kemal reached out and held her hand in his.

"You know what? We don't need to talk about it right now," he offered, watching as her tense shoulders immediately relaxed. Burcu looked up at him, amazed by his attitude. "Do you really want me to stay, or are you just being polite?"

"I really want you to stay," Burcu assured him. "I swear, I am not just saying this. I really thought you'd get out of here the moment you heard what I said," the teacher used her other arm to take his hand between hers.
