Madame Price always said the only way to tell a good story is to start at the beginning. I guess it's because you have to get all of the boring details out of the way. So since I am telling you my story, I may as well tell it properly.
During the spring of 1899 I had gone on a walk not too far from my home in the richer side of Brooklyn. My parents had died two years before, leaving their only child, me, to live with my nanny, Madame Price, and their large fortune on our Brooklyn Estate. At the time, we had two other estates, one in the countryside of New Jersey and another just outside of Boston. I was a young heiress, only sixteen years of age, and was expected by society to marry into another wealthy family. I had never been one to follow expectations, and since my parents had realized this before their death, they made sure I would inherit everything so that I could find the one boy who I truly wanted to marry instead of the boy that society wanted me to marry.I had always dreamed of falling in love with a boy who respected me and treated me as an equal, and when I, Juliet Stone, went on a walk during the spring of 1899, I found the first stepping stone to meeting such a boy. I had been enjoying the feeling of fresh sunshine on my face when I first heard the sound. It was a soft, pained whimpering coming from one of the few allies on the rich side of Brooklyn. Worried that someone had been hurt, I cautiously walked into the ally. I started following a bloody trail along with the whimpering farther into the ally, lifting my skirt to keep it from being stained. As I reached the back of the ally I gasped in horror at what I saw. A little boy, no older than six, lay at my feet bruised, battered and unconscious in a puddle of what I expected to be his own blood. He wore a dark pair of pants, a thin, plaid shirt that had obviously been ripped by his attacker, and had a small newsies cap laying a few feet away.
