"Well it didn't take you too long to get into your first fight, did it?" Mike chuckled as we looked over security footage to see if the stalker has been snooping around the house. So far, nothing had come up which was a good sign to me. Maybe they were starting to lose interest.
I rolled my eyes at his amusement. "I probably overreacted and now she's giving me the silent treatment. Her winter formal is tonight, and I don't know how to make this right before she goes."
"You could just apologize," he shrugged. "Even if you don't think you were wrong, sometimes waving the white flag is enough for women to lose their anger."
"I would but she's been avoiding being in the same room with me," I sighed before shaking my head. As much as I hated that we weren't speaking, I couldn't let some fight with Gabriella distract me from my job. "Look, let's just forget about this. I'd rather not focus on this when we've got bigger problems."
"Do we? We haven't seen any threats lately so maybe whoever was doing it finally gave up."
"Just wouldn't make sense," I muttered, rubbing my head in frustration. "They went from shooting at us to just giving up? It's not adding up. There has to be something else to this that we're not seeing.
"Let's just take a break from this so you can go talk to your girl," he suggested. "I'm sure the fight combined with us not figuring this shit out is enough to make you explode so it'd be best to take a break from it all."
As he walked out, I sat back in the chair and sighed, thinking about the groveling I was probably going to have to do to end this feud between us. I checked my phone and saw that she never answered my text asking her to talk and it made me want to punch a hole in the wall. The whole thing was stupid, and I wished that Gabriella could see that. We didn't need to be against each other right before she was about to go to an event like this but here we were.
That night, I got dressed in my all-black suit and waited downstairs for Gabriella to appear. When she did, I was floored. Her normally curly hair was straightened and she had on a red dress that hugged her curves just right and had a slit that went high enough to leave my imagination racing. If it was my choice, she wouldn't be going anywhere except straight to my bedroom in the guest house.
"Gabriella, you look beautiful," Mr. Carter smiled at her. "You're sure to break some hearts when you walk into the room."
"That's the plan," she smiled, sending me a knowing smirk. Fuck, this girl was going to be the death of me.
"Well, we should get going," Mrs. Carter said. "Chaperones have to make sure everything is in place for the kids."
Mr. Carter gave her a quick kiss and hugged Gabriella before we all walked out. During the drive I forced myself to keep my eyes on the road and not look back at Gabriella. If her mom wasn't here this car ride would've gone entirely different.
Once we got there, Gabriella immediately walked off to go talk to her friend as I went and found my corner that I would occupy for the night. As the dance started to kick off, Gabriella made a big show of dancing with her friend and moving her body in a way that would have me ready to take her home and have my way with her. I knew that she was doing it to get under my skin and I hated that it was working. Especially when some random boy walked up to her and started dancing with her.
Every now and then, Gabriella would glance over at me as if she needed to see my reaction to every move that she was making. When the boy she was dancing with had his arms wrapped around her waist, I could only think about taking out my taser and lighting his ass up.
Realizing my anger was going to take over, I took a deep breath and focused my thoughts on the threats and why they may have stopped. It didn't make sense why whoever was doing may have given up so easily. Maybe they wanted to catch us off guard so that we wouldn't be able to fight back. Whatever it was, I needed to be always on guard so I could handle whatever they threw at us.
