I have to take a minute to talk about Ninth House, by Leigh Bardugo. First of all, if you haven't read it, you need to. Now. The story is awesome, the writing is incredible— just fucking read it.
Anyway, this entry may include spoilers. So if you care to avoid them, just stop reading here.
As I was saying, this book is amazing. I got lost in it every time I picked it up. Alex Stern is the perfect main character, and Darlington is, in fact, not only Lethe's golden boy; but everyone's. Including mine! I say that because there's one line he says that reminds me so much of Riley. He says it over and over, as if repeating the words gives him greater confirmation that what he says is and has to be true. Those words are: "I will serve you till the end of days." God, just beautiful. Imagine a man actually saying that to you! Crazy, I know. No man could ever. Except Darlington. And Riley.
Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating. Riley doesn't say those words exactly. He does say things very similar, "Without you, I'd genuinely feel incomplete. I would do anything for your sake." Or sometimes he will randomly text me those things or just affectionate words in general, which, no offense, most men don't do. Or at least they don't actually mean it. It's hard not to compare those moments with what my ex used to say. My ex had all the sweet words of Darlington, but none of the action. There was no real care for my happiness— no real love there for them to give me. It was very one-sided... But fuck 'em.
Riley says those words and means them. He's shown me time and time again, and I couldn't be more thankful. Riley would run into a burning building for me, he would risk everything if it meant I was happy, and I would do the same for him. I knew he would do those things the moment he sped down the interstate to come get me when my car broke down in a bad thunderstorm that flooded the roads. All I had to do was call, and he was there. I know that for the rest of my life, I will have a Darlington, and he will have an Alex. We are equal, our acts of love mutual, and we will serve each other till the end of days.
