The renowned cardiologist, Dr. Abhimanyu Birla scrubbing for surgery and entering the OR of his hospital was just a common routine view for the people and staff at Birla Hospital. Yet today there was a different nervousness, fear and prayers when he had entered to perform, possibly, the most crucial surgery of his life.

He was about to perform the surgery of Akshara Birla - his life, his wife, his only love. He had known it wouldn't be easy for him but seeing his beautiful, fragile wife, lying there on the operating table, all bruised and battered, fighting for her life had made him die ten different kinds of death in that one glimpse.

He had never thought that he would be so unfortunate that he would have to face the same situation twice! He was still traumatized by the first time when he had worked hard to save her voice - the same voice that had him mesmerized even before he had ever seen her. Now, he had to save her heart - the same heart she had given to him, no questions asked. The same heart she said she had left with him a year ago.

The nearer he went towards the scalpel, the faster his heart had beat, the more he had trembled but this time he knew he had no one but himself to rely on and he couldn't let his panic and fear overpower him, especially now when his Akshu needed him the most.

He took a deep breath, brought his shivering hands under control and asked for the scalpel. He prayed to Mahadev to keep an eye on everything and let the entire surgery go without any complications and then, he had made the first cut.

•••••••••••••••••••••

It was touch and go so many times during the surgery. Akshara had sunk twice and Abhimanyu had to perform CPR and even use the external defibrillator on her.

He had finally breathed a sigh of relief when he had stitched the laceration himself and Akshu's condition had stabilized. He knew he was about to lose his composure and the tough facade he had forced upon himself but he held on.

While his staff prepared to transfer Akshara to the ward, he had rushed out to the temple and had profusely thanked all the Gods he could think of, for letting his Akshu's surgery go completely fine at the end.

He didn't change out of his scrubs rather he held Akshu's hands all throughout the transfer and when the dressings on her other wounds had to be changed, he stopped the nurses and did everything himself.

Then he had heard a knock and after he gave the permission to enter, he saw Dr. Rohan who had come to check upon his Abhimanyu Sir and Akshara Ma'am.

"Sir, ab kya? Hmne surgery ke liye toh uss Chief ko mana liya tha, but itne time mein maine usko jitna samjha hai, wo aapko yahan rukne bilkul bhi nhi dega", Rohan said.

"Jaanta hoon, Rohan. But wo Akshu ke surgeon-in-charge ko toh rukne dega naa? Especially tb jb usse ye kaha jaaye ki 12 hours after a surgery as delicate as this are the most important and the patient must be under her surgeon's observation all the time?", Abhimanyu sighed.

"Sir, AAP jhooth bolenge?", Rohan had been shocked.

"Dr. Rohan, apni Akshu ke liye main kuchh bhi kr skta hoon. Kisi bhi hadd tk jaa skta hoon! Iss waqt uske alawa mujhe kisi ki parwah nhi. Tum uss Chief tk meri baat pahucha sakte ho ki the surgery was successful but I need to be here to observe her?"

"Sir, aapke liye kuchh bhi!", Rohan gave him a smile and was about to go when Abhimanyu had called out his name. The moment Rohan had turned back to look at him, he had been hugged by Abhimanyu.

"Thank you, Rohan! Thank you for helping me save my Jaan's life. You have no idea how you have saved me.", Abhimanyu had said with a watery smile. Rohan just smiled back and left the ward for their privacy.

Abhimanyu simply sat there, staring unblinkingly at his brave yet incredibly stupid, strong yet fragile wife who was lying in front of him, covered in bandages having that serene expression that usually brought him calm and peace, that used to be his sukoon but not today.

Today, he simply felt pain, guilt and fear after looking at her. Pain - so strong that he thought he would break. Guilt - so much that he was suffocating. Fear - so terrible, his entire body was still shaking.

And then the first tear had rolled down.
