-------------------

Late into the night, a distant, powerful noise sends a slight ring to my ears and a shiver through my body. My eyes open heavy as a gate. What the hell was that sound?

I tilt my head up and the cold air meets my face with a jarring embrace. A bright first-quarter moon rests almost halfway across the sky. Behind me, I feel an easy-resting 049. He breathes softly.

From over the hills, a single large bang erupts. Sending perched birds fleeing to the clouds.

Shock immediately rushes my body. Locking it tight as memories breach into my mind like water from a dam, flooding it with terrible pictures. Pictures of threats and stiff lifeless bodies slumped on the floor.

All those guards; the one 096 mutilated... The ones 173 and 049 killed for me, I am... Responsible for that- aren't I? I may have not killed them, but if it weren't for me they may still be alive. And then Miles, there is no way around it. I killed that man- I killed him myself.

The noise repeats itself, followed up by an orchestra of bangs filling the freezing air... Gunshots.

Before I can even process it, or come up with some type of solution, 049 begins to rustle around with agitated movements.

"Are you awake?" He blurts out, tensely yet quietly. "Did you hear that?" He says coming down to a more controlled tone.

Attentive to him behind me I struggle to speak, it must be the foundation. But. I thought they'd have been gone.

In discomfort I latch my hands to a random part of his body for comfort, I believe his legs.

"Pardon me but we must get up now to assess the situation." He says with a calmed and put-together demeanor. He gets up and separates me from his cloak. He swiftly places his arms around my waist, and gingerly he brings me behind a nearby tree. He pokes his head around it.

"Can you see anything?"

I clear my throat. "No, sorry," I say to him looking outward. Though the moonshine reflects onto the white snowy surface, I barely see a thing. "Wait, I see lights".

I can faintly hear chatter off in the distance, "Lights? Where?" The doctor whispers.

"Shh, that way," I say pointing, "Listen".

Off in the distance flashing lights come nearer and the chatter clearer. "No, the gunshots have gone quiet, 173 still not found".

"173!" I say with a quiet, yet raised voice. How could that be? Right, they recontained him. So they must have taken him before the explosion. If they took him, they must have others too. Why the hell is he out exactly? I hope nothing else escaped.

"We must head back." 049 chimed. We both turn to face the direction we came, only to find more lights closing in behind us.

Looking for somewhere else to go it comes clear to us that we are between two cliffs, a fact which we never paid mind. Fair since we had thought they were already gone or at least leaving.

"We're trapped".

"Follow along, my dark appearance can shield your bright orange." He stuffs me back inside his cloak again. "We face away from them, and we'll be but a shadow."

049: "Just stick to the cliff, I'll keep watch."

We walk up an incline, with him facing us away, his head tilts toward the nearing soldiers and mine to the cold hard wall of rock. Nearer and nearer, I hear the voices.
