Consumers and Lovers

We both ran back to see one of the younger kids had woken up and was terrified, or that's what it looked like, I started to run over but Boss jumped ahead of me and quickly grabbed the kid and yelled

"VALERI GO PROTECT THE KIDS"

I was confused but jumped back towards the other kids, I looked back at Boss, he had cut off the 'kid's' head.

It wasn't a kid, it was a consumer. I stared in horror at the sight of the consumer, it had consumed a child, it was mortifying. I immediately casted the soul spell. A faint pink light seeped out of the book and it swirled mystically as I checked all the kids' eyes, they were normal, good. I quickly hopped out of the force field before it closed. I ran towards Boss just as he finished taking care of our problem.

"Don't tell me that that was one of our kids..." I muttered.

"No," Boss looked at me and cracked his neck, "We would've heard it, consumers always scream before eating prey."

I always hated consumers. They freak me out, they target anyone and anything. I picked up the last remaining piece of the consumer, its sharp tooth, they sell for good money.

"I can't sense anything else other than that little baby wanderer of yours." I giggled before shoving the tooth in my coat pocket.

He laughed "Same here kid," after sighing he looked at the force field," Now we have to wait an hour for that."

Boss pointed at the Force field. I sighed and looked over before poking it, I jumped back.

"OW-" I paused and looked at the force field, "Did- Does it shock people?"

Boss looked at me and scratched his neck, "Ah yeah it does, I forgot to mention that didn't I?"
Some time passed, maybe thirty minutes. I looked at the kids, most asleep. A light shone through out the cold dark library, falling right before one of the kids, the 13 year old who took the book, Boss looked at me,

"Oh."

I stared in sadness. Placed in front of the kid was a pair of scissors, fancy scissors. She picked them up and stared at them in awe. Boss walked up to me and hugged me,

"Soon Valeri."

I could feel my tears rolling down my face. They burned but wouldn't stop, why was I so sad over this? I got up and walked over to my desk. I placed the weapon in its suitcase. A child had gotten a soul item before me. How?

I fell asleep, by the time I woke up all the kids had left, besides that one kid who got the scissors. As I got up I glared at the kid then I walked into the employee only lounge, I fell on the couch, Boss came in after waving goodbye to that kid, he looked at me pitifully. I grabbed a paper and marked it down.

"The 5th time," I sighed, "This has been the 5th time since I started working here."

It might  not seem like a lot for 5 years but it felt like it.
