You woke up on that morning, a bit groggy to be honest, but still excited. As you rolled over in the bed, you noticed Brendan was gone, his side made up neatly.
Maybe he was making you a breakfast, or decoration the tiny kitchen of your apartment. Or maybe he was telling everyone what to do for a surprise.
You pulled yourself out of the warm bed smiling anyway, and pulled your card and gift out from under the shoes in your wardrobe. You had gotten him a pair of beats, and two tickets to Coachella 2016. And you were dying to give them to him.
It was your three year anniversary type thing. Neither of you remembered the day you actually met, so instead you just decided to call the day Brendan had finally kissed you your anniversary.
And it was today, May 29th.
You pushed the gifts back to the wardrobe and jumped quickly into the shower cos who knew what was waiting downstairs. You tried not to get your hopes up, cos let's admit it, Bren is the most forgetful person on the planet. But how can you help being a hopeless romantic, he couldn't possibly forget this one.
Once your hair was up in a bun, you had a presentable face of makeup on and some joggers and a shirt on you took the presents out again, and made a might racket of making your way down the stairs to let him know you were on the way.
But your heart fell when you saw a plain kitchen. Brendan sipping tea in his pyjamas on the counter. Nothing particularly special.
"Good morning" he said, looking up for a moment from his tea then back out the window again. You kept your present held behind your back.
"Hey" you whispered, just about getting it out. He looked up again.
"You okay?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.
"I ah- well it's just... yes, I'm fine" you stumbled, before turning back around keeping your efforts out of sight and racing back up the stairs again, tears stinging your eyes.
How could he forget this one? You locked the bathroom door after stuffing away the tickets and beats. Letting a few tears spill you grabbed some toilet paper and wiped your face. Big girls cry when their hearts are breaking, but today you were going to keep smiling.
Even if he forgot, it's still the same day. And you might as well make the best afford you can. So you straightened out your hair and put some real makeup. Changing into skinny jeans and a crop top, and flinging on a hoodie you garbed your phone and stuffed it in your pocket.
You checked your eyes once more in the mirror then walked downstairs again. But before you could open the door your phone rang for a text.
'Jenna- 9:53 : Hey, how about some Starbucks, bit of shopping aye?'
You smiled at the text from your friend. Exactly what you needed right now.
"Brendan I'm going out with Jenna!" You yelled without going into the kitchen and grabbed your keys off the counter in the hall.
You heard some sort of muffled agreement, the hurt still stinging at the out of your stomach, knowing he hadn't even a clue. There wasn't the slightest but of bother in there.
You pushed back the thoughts, picked up your bag and hopped into the tiny little Ford parked outside.
As you drove along the roads, starting toward Starbucks, Cry for Help came on. As angry as you were with Brendan, you couldn't help humming along.
The minute you pulled up outside the Starbucks near town, Jenna was up and at the door. She tapped the window once or twice, so you rolled it down looking at her questionably.
"Hey?"
"I think we should actually go back to your place" she winced
"What we just got here? And I don't want to go ho-"
"Aoife I really think we should go back to your apartment"
"Why though, I wanted Starbucks" you whined but didn't protest as she hopped into the car. Before up could say anything she dropped a frappechino into your lap.
"Now drive"
"Jenna why?" You groaned, but sticking your keys back into the unfit ion anyway.
"Why not?"
"Because Brendan forgot!" You blurted out, covering your mouth quickly afterwards then realised you were driving and thats not the best idea.
"Brendan forgot what?" She furrowed her eyebrows.
Your mouth fell open. Why did no one remember? You were positive You had at least been ranting to Jenna about this for the last month.
Yet she couldn't remember either.
"Nothing he forgot tea bags and I ah- I'm meant to get them now" you stuttered, the sick feeling progressing,
And that's how you ended up in a petrol station bathroom clutching tea bags to your chest and crying on your anniversary for a good ten minute.
Finally after several bangs on the door, Jenna managed to get you back in the car and driving to your apartment again.
You were hiccuping the whole way, and feeling like quite the piece of shit to be honest. It's not the best feeling.
So when Jenna told me to stop a few metres outside the apartment because she thinks she feels a flat tyre, I lost the plot.
But she was already in the door yelling something bout getting Bren to come check it out. That's when I noticed the socket of colour in the front room window.
Like a balloon or something. I squinted to see closer, then I was sure that I could see a few balloons. My heart skipped a beat as the front door opened again.
Brendan held it open, decked out in nice clothes and hair done up and all. You could feel your cheeks flaming as you began walking up the steps. And within seconds you wrapped him into a hug.
"I though you forgot!" You mumbled into his shoulder, that warm feeling spreading over you now.
"Of course I didn't forget!" He laughed, kissing your forehead. And then he took your hand leading you into the apartment. Before you knew it there was a blindfold wrapped around your eyes, by someone else, Jenna maybe.
"Hey what!" You protested, no free hands. "why do I need this?"
There was no answer. Just a simple "just follow me" from Bren as he led you by hand.
When you stopped you practically walked into the back of him, then his hand left yours and you heard his feet moving to the other side of the room.
"Bren?" You asked, fumbling around empty air. But you could feel other presences in the room as well, you just had no idea who they were.
Then the mask was taken off. And about twenty or so poppers were blown in your face, strewing sprinkles all over you, leaving you with a massive smile. There was sparkles everywhere, stars hanging from the ceiling.
And most importantly, about twenty of your best friends and family all blowing their little party whistles.
The other five were here, Josh, Dayl, Cian, Ryan and Dean then about seven of your friends, and your sister and cousin.
You don't really remember your reaction, just a lot of hugs and squealing. And when it came to Bren, a great big kiss.
"You didn't think I'd actually forgotten?" He smirked, holding me firm in his arms.
You smiled, shrugging, and pecked his lips.
"Happy anniversary Aoife "
"And happy anniversary to you too" you grinned.
